How to measure when installing electrical cable trays

Proper measurement for cable tray installation involves determining tray width, depth, length, and support spacing based on cable types, fill capacity, and code requirements.

Determine Tray Width and Depth

Start by listing all cables that will run in the tray, including their outside diameters, not just conductor size, as this affects the actual space they occupy. Calculate the total cable area and compare it to the allowable fill percentage (commonly 40% of the tray's usable area) to determine the required tray width and depth. Increase width first, then depth if necessary, ensuring the tray can safely carry the load without excessive deflection.

Measure Tray Length and Layout

Plan the tray route along the shortest and straightest path to minimize cable loss and simplify maintenance. Measure the total run length and account for bends, tees, and offsets. Ensure segregation of power and signal cables to reduce electromagnetic interference.

Use standard tray lengths and fittings to maintain compatibility and structural integrity.

Support Spacing

Measure and mark support points according to the tray type and manufacturer specifications. Ladder trays typically require supports every 4–6 feet, while ventilated troughs may have slightly shorter spans for smaller cables. Ensure supports are level and aligned to prevent sagging and maintain proper cable routing.

Cable Fill and NEC Compliance

Perform cable fill calculations according to NEC Article 392. 22. For mixed-use trays, sum the diameters of large single-conductor cables and the cross-sectional areas of multiconductor cables, ensuring the total does not exceed the tray's allowable fill.

This prevents overheating and ensures compliance with electrical codes.

Additional Considerations

Material selection: Choose tray material based on environment (indoor, outdoor, corrosive) and mechanical load. Bonding and grounding: Metallic trays must be properly bonded and grounded according to NEC 392. 60.

Bend radius: Maintain minimum bend radius for cables exiting the tray to prevent damage. Future expansion: Allow extra space for additional cables to avoid overcrowding and costly retrofits. By carefully measuring tray dimensions, support spacing, and cable fill, you ensure a safe, code-compliant, and maintainable cable tray installation.
