Function of Fiber Optic Bundle Expander Connectors

Expanded beam fiber optic connectors use lenses to expand, collimate, and refocus light, enabling contactless, high-durability optical connections.

Operating Principle

Expanded beam connectors operate by expanding the light exiting the fiber core into a larger, collimated beam using a lens at the connector endface. This expanded beam traverses a small air gap between the two connector ends, eliminating the need for direct fiber-to-fiber contact. A second lens at the receiving end then refocuses the light back into the fiber core, effectively restoring the signal to its original size and direction.

The expansion can increase the beam diameter up to 150 times the original fiber core, which reduces sensitivity to misalignment, dust, and debris.

Advantages Over Physical Contact Connectors

Unlike traditional physical contact (PC) connectors, which require precise alignment and polishing of fiber tips to minimize insertion loss, expanded beam connectors are contactless, making them more robust in harsh environments. They tolerate dust, dirt, and mechanical vibration, and can withstand far more mating cycles without frequent cleaning or damage. This makes them ideal for applications in military, mining, offshore, and industrial automation.

Performance Characteristics

Insertion Loss: Typically higher than PC connectors, with multimode expanded beam connectors ranging up to 2. 0 dB, compared to ~0. 15 dB for standard multimode LC connectors.

Return Loss: High-quality expanded beam connectors achieve ≥32 dB for multimode fibers, ensuring good signal quality. Durability: Can handle up to 100,000 mating cycles and operate in temperatures from -40 °C to +85 °C. Fiber Types: Available for both singlemode and multimode fibers, and support multiple fiber counts, typically 2–16 fibers per connector.

Applications

Expanded beam connectors are particularly suitable for high-density, short-reach, or harsh-environment applications where frequent cleaning and precise alignment of traditional connectors would be impractical. They are widely used in hyperscale data centers, tactical fiber-optic assemblies, and industrial automation systems.

Summary

The core principle of fiber optic bundle expander connectors is the use of lenses to expand and refocus light across an air gap, providing a contactless, robust, and low-maintenance optical connection. This design reduces alignment sensitivity, increases durability, and simplifies installation and maintenance, making it ideal for demanding or high-density fiber optic networks.
