Lc elbow cold splice

LC elbow cold splices are cold-applied silicone or EPDM rubber kits designed to join or terminate longitudinally corrugated (LC) medium-voltage cables safely and reliably without heat. OverviewLC elbow cold splices are used to connect or repair longitudinally corrugated shielded cables in medium-voltage systems (typically 15–35 kV). These splices are cold-applied, meaning they do not require heat or open flames, making them safer for environments with combustible gases or outdoor installations.

They are suitable for indoor, outdoor, and direct-burial applications.

Materials and Construction

Splice Body: Typically made of silicone rubber, providing high UV resistance, flexibility, and dielectric strength. Jacketing: Often EPDM rubber, offering physical protection and corrosion resistance. Mastic or Sealant: Some kits include mastic strips for additional moisture sealing, especially for elbow-to-cable jacket applications.

Connectors: Compatible with copper or aluminum compression (crimp) connectors or shearbolt connectors for reliable electrical continuity.

Key Features

Cold Shrink Technology: The pre-expanded tubing contracts onto the cable when the support core is removed, creating a tight, circumferential seal. Active Memory Seal: Maintains tight contact during thermal expansion and contraction, ensuring long-term reliability. Voltage and Temperature Ratings: Many kits, such as the 3M QS4 series, are rated for 35 kV with a BIL of 250 kV and operating temperatures up to 105°C, with emergency overload up to 140°C.

Ease of Installation: No hot-work permits are required, and installation is straightforward with minimal tools.

Applications

Inline Splices: Joining two LC cables in series.

Elbow-to-

Cable Connections: Sealing the interface between a cable and an elbow termination. Size Transitions: Accommodates conductor size changes within the kit's range (e.g., 1/0 AWG to 1000 kcmil),.

Outdoor/

Exposed Environments: UV-resistant silicone and EPDM materials allow use in trackside or direct-burial installations.

E Connectivity Cold Shrink Splices (CATJ, CSJD, CST): One-piece cold-applied splices for LC and other shielded cables, including integrated stress control and mastic for void filling. DSG-Canusa CSS Series: Cold-applied silicone rubber kits for in-line or elbow-to-cable applications, with optional mastic strips and external ground kits.

Installation Notes

Prepare Cable: Strip insulation and shields according to kit instructions. Install Connector: Use compatible compression or shearbolt connectors. Position Cold Shrink Tube: Slide over the splice area.

Release Core: Allow the tubing to shrink and form a tight seal. Optional Mastic: Apply mastic strips for additional moisture protection if included.
