Sino-European Wireless Fiber Optic Sensor

Sino-European collaboration in wireless fiber optic sensors is advancing smart sensing technologies with applications in industrial monitoring, healthcare, and environmental detection.

Collaborative Research and Development

The EU-funded SOFST project has facilitated knowledge transfer between Europe and China, particularly between the Aston Institute of Photonics Technologies (UK) and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China). The collaboration focused on smart optical fiber sensor technology, including fiber grating sensors, label-free sensors for food quality inspection, and functional nano- and bio-coatings to enhance sensor performance. Researchers developed dual-parameter sensors using few-mode microfibers, Mach-Zehnder interferometers, in-line mode interferometers, and reflective probes, enabling highly sensitive detection of temperature, ammonia gas, glucose, and flour humidity.

Technical Innovations

Key innovations include embedding ultra-short distributed Bragg reflector fiber lasers into textiles for monitoring physiological signals like arterial pulse. Graphene-coated microfibers have been used to create highly sensitive gas and temperature sensors. These developments highlight the potential for miniaturized, power-efficient, and multifunctional sensors suitable for industrial, biomedical, and environmental applications.

Industrial Applications and Market Trends

Fiber optic sensors are widely used in object detection, structural health monitoring, and environmental sensing. Companies like OMRON, Baumer, and SICK manufacture sensors with high precision, operational reliability, and flexibility for diverse applications, including detecting small objects, liquids, and surface variations. Plastic fibers offer flexibility for dynamic applications, while glass fibers provide durability and low signal attenuation for challenging environments.

The European fiber optic sensor market is projected to grow from USD 1,256. 51 million in 2025 to USD 3,324 million by 2035, with Germany as the largest market and the UK as the fastest-growing region. Growth is driven by technological advancements, high-speed data transmission needs, and government initiatives promoting smart infrastructure and automation.

SummarySino-European wireless fiber optic sensor initiatives combine cutting-edge research, prototype development, and industrial deployment, enabling applications in smart manufacturing, healthcare monitoring, and environmental sensing. The collaboration strengthens knowledge exchange, supports PhD training, and accelerates market adoption of advanced fiber optic technologies.
