What is an APS distribution box

An APS distribution box is a specialized power distribution unit that sequentially controls the power-on of multiple circuits to prevent in-rush current trips and manage energy efficiently.

Overview

An AP

S (Advanced Power Sequencing) distribution box is designed to manage the distribution of electrical power to multiple devices or circuits in a controlled, sequential manner. Unlike standard distribution boxes that simply split power to various circuits, APS units control the order and timing of power delivery to prevent issues such as main breaker trips caused by simultaneous in-rush currents from multiple devices starting at once.

Key Features

Sequential Power-

On: Each output circuit is powered on one at a time with a programmable delay, reducing peak current and preventing upstream breaker trips. Cascading Capability: Multiple APS units can be connected so that the next unit only starts its sequence after the previous one completes, allowing scalable power management. Protection Components: APS boxes often include RCBO breakers with neutral disconnect functions, providing both overload and earth fault protection.

Energy Management: Ideal for permanent installations in venues like schools, churches, and public halls, APS units can automatically power off lighting and video systems after use and sequentially power them back on when needed. Integration with Control Systems: APS units can interface with DMX/RDM control systems, making them suitable for complex lighting and video setups. ApplicationsAPS distribution boxes are commonly used in lighting and video systems, particularly where multiple fixtures or devices require individual power sources.

They are essential in environments where in-rush currents could otherwise trip breakers, such as theaters, concert halls, and large event venues. By managing the power-on sequence, APS units ensure safe, efficient, and automated operation of electrical systems.

Comparison to Standard Distribution Boxes

While a standard distribution box distributes power to multiple circuits and houses protective components like fuses or circuit breakers, an APS distribution box adds intelligent sequencing and energy management features, making it particularly useful for systems with high startup loads or sensitive equipment.
