Distribution Box Material List

Distribution boxes are commonly made from metals like steel and aluminum or plastics such as PVC, HDPE, polycarbonate, and thermoset plastics, each chosen based on strength, corrosion resistance, and application environment.

Metal Distribution Boxes

Steel is widely used for its high strength and durability, making it ideal for industrial settings, outdoor installations, and high-voltage applications. It provides excellent protection against mechanical impacts and can block electromagnetic and radio frequency interference, helping maintain system performance. For wet or corrosive environments, stainless steel or epoxy/powder-coated steel is preferred to prevent rust and chemical damage.

Aluminum is lighter than steel and naturally resistant to corrosion due to its oxide layer. It is suitable for residential, commercial, and outdoor applications where weight and rust resistance are important. Both steel and aluminum boxes should be selected with appropriate IP ratings to ensure protection against dust and water ingress.

Plastic Distribution BoxesPVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) are lightweight, cost-effective, and resistant to rust, making them suitable for indoor or low-voltage applications. They are easy to install and maintain, but generally less impact-resistant than metals. Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA) are engineering thermoplastics that offer high mechanical strength, flame retardancy, and durability, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

These materials often meet UL 94 fire safety standards, providing protection against fire hazards. Thermoset plastics, such as Sheet Molding Compound (SMC), are also used for distribution boxes in environments requiring chemical resistance, high strength, and long-term durability.

Key Considerations

Environment: Choose metals for high-impact or outdoor use; plastics for indoor or low-voltage applications. Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel or coated metals for wet or salty environments; plastics naturally resist corrosion. Fire Safety: Polycarbonate, ASA, and thermoset plastics provide flame retardancy.

I

P Rating: Higher IP ratings indicate better protection against dust and water, critical for outdoor or industrial installations. Weight and Handling: Aluminum and plastics are lighter and easier to install than steel. Selecting the right material ensures safety, durability, and compliance with electrical codes such as NEC and OSHA, while protecting internal components like circuit breakers, fuses, and bus bars from environmental and mechanical damage.
