Butterfly-shaped optical cable interface connection method

Butterfly-shaped optical cables, also known as ribbon or flat-profile cables, allow efficient multi-fiber connections with high flexibility and low signal loss. Structure and DesignButterfly-shaped optical cables feature a flat, wing-like cross-section with the optical fiber positioned in the center and two parallel strength members on either side, typically made of Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) or steel for outdoor self-supporting variants. This design provides directional bending resistance, minimizing stress on the fiber when bent along the flat plane, while edge-on bending requires more force, protecting against accidental kinks.

Indoor versions are lightweight and flexible, while outdoor self-supporting types include a steel messenger wire for aerial deployment.

Connection Methods

Butterfly cables support several connection techniques: Fusion Splicing: Individual fibers are aligned and fused using an electric arc or laser, creating a permanent, low-loss connection. This method is highly reliable but requires specialized equipment and trained technicians. Ribbon Splicing: Entire ribbons of fibers are fused simultaneously, ideal for high-density applications like data centers.

It is efficient for connecting multiple fibers at once. Connectorization: Connectors are attached to individual fibers, allowing plug-and-play connections to patch panels or devices. This method is simpler but introduces slightly higher attenuation.

Pre-

Terminated Solutions: Cables come factory-terminated with connectors, reducing installation time and ensuring consistent performance.

Applications

Butterfly cables are widely used in: FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home): Indoor cables (GJXH type) connect building entry points to subscriber ONTs, supporting 1–12 fiber cores. Data Centers and Networking: High-density environments benefit from compact, flexible cables that maintain optimal data transmission rates. Industrial and Medical Equipment: Their durability and low signal loss make them suitable for precise, high-reliability applications.

Telecommunications: They provide low attenuation and interference resistance for stable communication links.

Advantages

High Flexibility: Easy installation in tight spaces and around corners. Durability: Strength members protect fibers from compression and tensile stress.

Bend-

Insensitive Fibers: Typically use ITU-T G. 657 single-mode fibers, tolerating small bend radii without signal loss. Electromagnetic Immunity: Non-metallic strength members prevent interference and lightning hazards.

Butterfly-shaped optical cables combine space efficiency, reliability, and ease of installation, making them ideal for modern high-bandwidth networks, both indoors and outdoors.
