Optical Probe Module

An Optical Probe Module is a device used to measure, test, or interface with optical signals, often combining optical and electrical functionalities for applications in photonics, fiber optics, and semiconductor testing.

Overview

Optical probe modules serve as critical tools for testing and measuring optical signals in various applications, including photonic integrated circuits (PICs), fiber optic networks, and optical communication systems. They can be designed for contact or non-contact measurements, and often integrate with spectrometers, wafer probers, or network testing equipment to provide accurate optical data. Types and Applications1.

Opto-

Electronic Probe Modules for PIC Testing Modules like the UFO Probe® Card from Jenoptik enable simultaneous optical and electrical testing of photonic integrated circuits at the wafer level. These modules combine optical test concepts with cantilever or vertical needle probes, allowing high-throughput, parallel testing without active alignment. They are used to verify known-good dies (KGDs), improve yield, and qualify PICs efficiently for applications in AI, quantum computing, and high-speed data centers.

2. Optical Measurement Probes Instrument Systems offers EOP optical probes for measuring irradiance and radiation coupling. These probes include a diffusor to scatter incident light and couple it into a spectrometer via optical fibers.

Models vary in cosine correction, light throughput, and spectral range, making them suitable for extended light sources, direct sunlight, or precise laboratory measurements. 3. Fiber Optic Network Probes Modules like DIMENSION's optical probes integrate optical power measurement, visual fault location (VFL), and line-finding functions.

They feature non-contact universal interfaces compatible with multiple fiber types (2. 5 mm, 1. 25 mm, SC, LC), reducing the risk of contamination or damage.

These probes are designed for rapid on-site testing of fiber optic networks, with intuitive interfaces and fast measurement cycles. 4. Wafer Prober Systems Prober systems such as the MPI AVIOR series use optical probe modules to perform highly accurate optical and electrical measurements on wafers.

They support multiple wafer sizes (2”–8”) and configurations (top-emitting, flip-chip, die/package), with flexible optics and software for alignment, mapping, and automated testing. Key FeaturesHigh-throughput testing for wafers or networksSimultaneous optical and electrical measurements for integrated photonicsNon-contact or contact interfaces to prevent damage or contaminationAdaptable to multiple layouts and fiber typesIntegration with automated test equipment for reproducibility and efficiencySummaryOptical probe modules are essential in modern photonics and optical communications, enabling precise, efficient, and high-throughput testing of optical signals.

They are widely used in semiconductor wafer testing, fiber optic network verification, and laboratory measurements, supporting the development of advanced technologies like AI, quantum computing, and high-speed data transmission. Their design ensures accuracy, reliability, and adaptability across diverse optical testing scenarios.
