Fiber Optic Sensor Through-beam and Diffuse Reflection

Diffuse reflection and through-beam fiber optic sensors detect objects using light, but differ in light path, detection range, and application suitability.

Overview of Fiber Optic Sensors

A fiber optic sensor consists of a light source (typically an LED), optical fibers, and a receiver or photodiode. The amplifier contains the electronics for signal processing, while the fiber heads transmit and receive light. These sensors are ideal for tight spaces, harsh environments, or areas with high electrical noise, as the sensing heads contain no electronics and can be placed remotely from the amplifier.

Diffuse Reflection (Reflective) Fiber Optic SensorsDiffuse reflection sensors detect objects by measuring the light reflected from the target back into the receiving fiber. The sensor evaluates changes in light intensity caused by the object's surface properties, such as color, texture, or gloss. Key characteristics include: Components: LED emitter, receiving fiber, and amplifier.

Operation: Light is emitted toward the object; reflected light returns to the receiver. Advantages: Works well in dusty, foggy, or wet environments; suitable for low-reflectivity or irregularly shaped objects like metal sheets, plastics, or glass. Limitations: Detection range is limited to the vicinity of the fiber tip; weak reflection from dark or rough surfaces can reduce reliability.

Applications: Detecting small parts, irregular objects, or in environments where placing a receiver opposite the target is impractical.

Through-

Beam Fiber Optic SensorsThrough-beam sensors use a separate transmitter and receiver placed on opposite sides of the detection area. The sensor detects objects when they interrupt the light beam. Key characteristics include: Components: Two fibers (transmitter and receiver) and an amplifier.

Operation: Light travels directly from the transmitter to the receiver; any object blocking the beam triggers detection. Advantages: Can detect objects at longer distances; unaffected by surface reflectivity; reliable for transparent or reflective surfaces. Limitations: Requires precise alignment of transmitter and receiver; more expensive; performance can be affected by dust, fog, or rain.

Applications: Long-range detection, counting objects on conveyors, or detecting transparent materials. Through-beam sensors excel in long-range detection and for objects with reflective or transparent surfaces. Selecting the appropriate type depends on detection distance, object properties, and environmental conditions.
