Fiber optic cable installation in conduit

Installing fiber optic cable in conduit requires careful planning, proper conduit selection, and controlled cable pulling to protect the fibers and ensure long-term performance.

Planning and Preparation

Begin with a site survey to map the route, identify obstacles, and determine conduit length and diameter. Leave 25–40% extra space in the conduit for future expansion or additional cables. Ensure all permits and building-code compliance are in place before starting the installation.

Select the appropriate conduit material based on the environment: HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): Flexible, durable, ideal for underground runs and long continuous pathways.

PV

C (Schedule 40 or 80): Rigid, corrosion-resistant, suitable for exposed areas or heavy-load zones. Rigid Galvanized Steel (RGS): Used in industrial or fire-rated areas where physical impact protection is required. Consider using innerducts—smaller flexible tubes inside the main conduit—to separate fiber runs and reduce friction during pulling.

Cable Installation

Attach the cable to a pull string using a swivel pulling eye to prevent twisting. Always pull on the cable's strength members (e.g., Aramid yarn), never directly on the outer jacket or glass fibers. Lubricate the cable and conduit with a water-based fiber optic pulling lubricant to reduce friction, especially for long runs or multiple bends.

Avoid petroleum-based lubricants, which can damage the cable jacket. Pull the cable smoothly and continuously, ensuring the manufacturer's maximum pulling tension is not exceeded (commonly around 600 pounds for outdoor cables),. Maintain the minimum bend radius—typically 20 times the cable diameter under tension—to prevent fiber damage.

For complex or long pathways, consider mid-span access points to re-lubricate and manage tension, or pull from the middle outwards to both ends. Post-InstallationAfter pulling, terminate and test the fiber using an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) or Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) to verify signal integrity and detect any bends, splices, or contamination that could affect performance. Regular inspection and maintenance of the conduit and fiber network will ensure long-term reliability and facilitate future upgrades without re-excavation.

By following these steps—careful planning, proper conduit selection, controlled pulling, and thorough testing—you can ensure a safe, durable, and high-performance fiber optic installation.
