How to install a single-core optical cable terminal box

Installing a single-core optical cable terminal box involves careful preparation, secure mounting, proper fiber routing, and splicing to ensure reliable network performance.

Preparation

Check Components and Environment: Verify the terminal box type, cable type, and all included components. Ensure the working area is clean, dry, and flat, and that standard tools (screwdrivers, drills, cable strippers) are available. Plan Installation Location: Choose a location that is easily accessible, protected from moisture and dust for outdoor boxes, or suitable for indoor corridors.

Ensure the front panel is accessible for future maintenance. Prepare the Fiber Cable: Determine the length to cut (typically about 100 cm) and strip the cable carefully. Keep a reserved length of about 4 cm for the reinforced core.

Avoid damaging the optical fiber; if damaged, re-strip a new section.

Mounting the Terminal Box

Fix the Box: Use wall anchors, screws, or pole-mounting hardware as appropriate. Ensure the box is firmly anchored and level to prevent movement. Install Adapters and Splitters: Mount the adapters on the plate and secure them with screws.

If using an optical splitter, place it in the designated groove and connect it to the adapters.

Cable Entry and Fiber Routing

Insert the Cable: Pierce the rubber diaphragm at the cable entry point before threading the cable into the box. Protect the fiber with foam strips and secure the cable with the fixing clamp. Manage Slack: Coil any uncut fiber at the bottom of the box with a minimum bend radius of 30 mm.

Use nylon ties to secure the fibers without causing stress or sharp bends. Route Fibers Through Guide Posts: Use the internal plastic guide posts to route fibers to the splice tray, ensuring smooth curves and avoiding tight bends.

Splicing and Connection

Splice Fibers: Perform fusion or mechanical splicing according to the fiber type. Ensure splices are protected in the splice tray and labeled for easy identification. Connect to Adapters: Attach pigtails or connectors to the adapters, ensuring secure and stable connections for signal transmission.

Testing and Final Checks

Check Fiber Stability: Gently pull on fibers to ensure they are secure and do not shift. Test Signal Quality: Use a fiber power meter or optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) to verify signal strength and detect any weak points or faults. Close and Seal the Box: Ensure the box is properly closed, with gaskets or seals intact for outdoor installations to prevent moisture ingress.

Following these steps ensures a clean, maintainable, and reliable installation of a single-core optical cable terminal box suitable for FTTH or other fiber optic networks. Proper fiber handling, secure mounting, and careful splicing are critical to long-term network performance.
