Fiber optic connector color

Fiber optic connector colors indicate fiber type, polish type, and network application, following standardized color codes like TIA-598-C.

Connector Color Overview

Fiber optic connectors use color coding to identify the type of fiber and the polish of the connector: Blue connectors: Single-mode fiber with UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) polish, featuring a flat endface for low insertion loss and back reflection, suitable for long-distance telecom and backbone links. Green connectors: Single-mode fiber with APC (Angled Physical Contact) polish, with an angled endface to reduce return loss, ideal for RF video, FTTx, and high-performance single-mode links. Beige connectors: Multimode fiber OM1 or OM2, typically 62.

5/125 µm or 50/125 µm cores, used in legacy networks or short-distance LANs. Aqua connectors: Multimode fiber OM3 or OM4, optimized for VCSEL lasers and high-speed short-range data transmission, matching the aqua jacket color. Erika Violet connectors: Sometimes used for OM4 multimode fiber depending on the manufacturer.

Jacket and Fiber Color Coding

The outer jacket color also identifies fiber type: Yellow jacket: Single-mode fiberOrange jacket: OM1/OM2 multimode fiberAqua jacket: OM3/OM4 multimode fiberErika Violet jacket: OM4 multimode fiber variant Inside cables, individual fibers are color-coded according to the TIA-598-C standard to simplify identification and reduce errors: Standard 12-color sequence for fibers 1–12: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua. For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats with stripes or tube color coding to maintain unique identification. For 16-fiber MPO connectors, fibers 13–16 are Olive, Magenta, Tan, and Lime.

Practical Benefits

Error reduction: Standardized colors prevent mis-splicing and cross-connections. Operational efficiency: Technicians can quickly identify fiber types and connector polish, minimizing downtime. Global consistency: TIA-598-C ensures uniform interpretation across regions and manufacturers.

Understanding these color codes is essential for installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting in data centers, telecom networks, and high-density fiber environments.
