Laser power is tested using diodes to determine its quality

Laser power is tested using diodes primarily through L-I-V characterization and photo detector feedback to evaluate performance, efficiency, and quality.

Overview of Laser Diode Testing

Laser diodes are tested to ensure high performance, reliability, and long operational lifetimes. Testing is essential during development, manufacturing, and quality control to verify parameters such as threshold current, maximum output power, emission wavelength, beam profile, and temporal characteristics. These tests help identify defects, ensure consistent product quality, and predict long-term behavior.

L-I-V CharacterizationThe light-current-voltage (L-I-V) test is a fundamental method for assessing laser diode quality. In this test: A sweep current is applied to the laser diode, ranging from microamperes to milliamperes. The optical output power (L) is measured using a photo detector (PD), which converts light intensity into an electrical signal.

The voltage drop (V) across the diode is measured simultaneously. The resulting L-I curve shows how the laser's output power responds to injected current, revealing key parameters such as threshold current (I_th), slope efficiency, and differential quantum efficiency. The threshold current is the point where the diode transitions from spontaneous emission to stimulated emission, indicating the onset of lasing.

A lower threshold current generally reflects higher-quality semiconductor material and efficient design.

Additional Parameters

Other important parameters measured during testing include: Threshold current density: Normalizes threshold current by the diode's active area, providing a more accurate comparison of material quality. External differential quantum efficiency: Determined from the slope of the L-I curve above threshold, indicating how efficiently injected electrons produce photons. Spectral characteristics: The laser's emission wavelength and bandwidth are monitored, as these can shift with drive current and temperature.

Beam profile and spatial emission: Ensures the laser emits a consistent and well-defined beam, critical for applications requiring precise optics.

Role of Controllers and Safety

Laser diodes are sensitive to current and temperature fluctuations. Current drivers provide stable injection currents, while temperature controllers maintain consistent operating conditions. These systems protect the diode from damage and ensure accurate measurement of optical output.

Summary

Testing laser power using diodes involves applying controlled currents, measuring optical output with photo detectors, and analyzing L-I-V curves to determine threshold current, efficiency, and overall quality. This process ensures that laser diodes meet specifications, perform reliably, and maintain consistent output for their intended applications.
