Representation of Optical Power Meters

An optical power meter typically consists of a sensor head connected to a display unit, often handheld or bench-mounted, with a photodetector and digital readout for measuring optical power.

General Appearance

An optical power meter usually has two main parts: the sensor head and the display unit. The sensor head contains the photodetector, which converts light into an electrical signal. It may be mounted on a small post or stand for precise alignment with the incoming light beam, especially in lab setups, or integrated directly into a handheld device for field use.

The display unit shows the measured optical power, often in watts or dBm, and may include buttons or a touchscreen to select the wavelength and measurement settings.

Sensor Head

The sensor head can vary depending on the type of measurement: Photodiode-based sensors are common for low-power measurements and may include optical attenuators to extend the measurement range. Thermal sensors are used for higher power levels and often appear as a small circular or rectangular head with a flat surface to receive the light beam. Some sensor heads are fiber-coupled, allowing direct connection to fiber optic cables, while others are designed for free-space beams.

Display Unit

The display unit can be stand-alone or integrated with the sensor. Stand-alone units are often rectangular with a digital screen, buttons for wavelength selection, and sometimes a numeric keypad. Handheld meters combine the sensor and display in a single compact device, making them portable for field testing.

Bench-mounted meters may have larger displays and additional ports for calibration or connection to other instruments.

Additional Features

Some optical power meters are combined with other instruments, such as optical light sources (OLS) or visual fault locators (VFL), and may include USB or network interfaces for data logging. The overall design is functional, emphasizing ease of alignment, accurate measurement, and clear display of optical power. In summary, an optical power meter looks like a small, precise instrument with a sensor head for capturing light and a display unit for reading measurements, available in handheld, bench-top, or integrated forms depending on the application.
