Long- and short-range fiber optic sensors

Long fiber optic sensors provide distributed sensing over large distances, while short fiber optic sensors measure localized points with high precision.

Overview

Fiber optic sensors use optical fibers to detect physical quantities such as strain, temperature, pressure, or vibration by modulating light properties like intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength as it travels through the fiber. They are immune to electromagnetic interference, can operate in harsh environments, and are widely used in industries like aerospace, energy, and civil infrastructure.

Short Fiber Optic Sensors

Short fiber optic sensors are typically point sensors that measure a specific location along the fiber. Examples include Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), which reflect light at a specific wavelength that shifts with strain or temperature changes. Key features include: High spatial resolution: Can detect small changes at precise points.

Compact size: Suitable for embedding in structures or machinery. Applications: Structural health monitoring, aerospace components, and industrial machinery where localized measurements are critical.

Long Fiber Optic Sensors

Long fiber optic sensors provide distributed sensing along the entire length of the fiber. They measure changes continuously over distances ranging from tens to hundreds of meters, or even kilometers. Techniques include Rayleigh, Raman, or Brillouin scattering.

Key features include: Continuous monitoring: Detects strain, temperature, or pressure along the fiber. Large coverage: Ideal for pipelines, power cables, or bridges. Applications: Structural health monitoring of long infrastructures, oil and gas pipelines, and perimeter security.

The choice depends on the application requirements, including distance, resolution, and environmental conditions.

Both types leverage the advantages of optical fibers, such as immunity to EMI, safety in high-voltage areas, and the ability to operate in harsh environments.
