Details of Distribution Network Automation Experiment

The Distribution Network Automation experiment at Drexel University provides hands-on experience in network reconfiguration, load balancing, and loss reduction using a modular laboratory setup and a Distribution Management System.

Experiment Overview

The experiment is conducted in Drexel University's Reconfigurable Distribution Automation and Control Laboratory (RDAC), designed to give students practical experience in managing distribution networks. The primary goal is to balance loads and reduce real power losses by reconfiguring the network topology through the operation of sectionalizing and tie switches. This hands-on approach complements theoretical studies in power distribution and system optimization.

Laboratory Setup

Modular Stations: RDAC consists of four modular stations that can be interconnected to form a distribution system with 36 buses, 16 three-phase lines, 16 three-phase sectionalizing switches, and 16 three-phase tie switches. Load Types: Various types of loads are included to simulate realistic distribution conditions. Distribution Management System (DMS): Students use the DMS module to acquire system data, operate switches, perform network reconfiguration, and calculate real power losses.

Educational Objectives

The experiment aims to teach students to: Evaluate network configurations: Understand the advantages and disadvantages of different topologies. Perform load balancing: Transfer loads from heavily loaded feeders to less loaded ones to optimize system performance. Reduce real power losses: Analyze how reconfiguration and phase balancing can minimize energy losses.

Analyze unbalanced systems: Learn single-phase switching techniques to balance loads across phases (a, b, c).

Methodology

Network Reconfiguration: Involves opening normally closed switches and closing normally open tie switches to change the network topology. Data Analysis: Students collect operational data, perform loss calculations, and study the impact of different configurations on system efficiency. Scenario Studies: Multiple network scenarios are tested to understand the effects of load shifts, seasonal demand changes, and equipment limitations.

Benefits and Applications

Practical Skills: Students gain hands-on experience in switch operation, system monitoring, and loss reduction techniques. System Optimization: The experiment demonstrates how network reconfiguration improves reliability, reduces losses, and extends equipment lifespan. Educational Integration: RDAC complements other labs, such as the Interconnected Power System Laboratory (IPSL), providing a full spectrum of generation, transmission, and distribution learning.

Broader Context

Distribution automation experiments like RDAC reflect the industry trend toward smart grids, where automation enhances reliability, efficiency, and self-healing capabilities of distribution networks. Primary functions include installation of equipment, communications, and SCADA monitoring, while secondary functions leverage this data for advanced operations like fault detection, load balancing, and voltage regulation. This experiment provides a microcosm of real-world distribution automation, preparing students for careers in power system operation, planning, and smart grid implementation.
