How to install a fiber optic cable vibration damper

Install the vibration damper by positioning it near the cable support, wrapping the damping section around the cable, and ensuring proper spacing from hardware to reduce aeolian vibrations without damaging the fiber.

Step-by-

Step Installation1. Prepare the Cable and Damper Ensure the fiber optic cable (ADSS or OPGW) is properly installed between poles or support points according to manufacturer specifications. Select the correct damper type and size for the cable diameter and span length.

2. Position the Damper Place the damper near the support point, keeping the gripping section toward the support. Maintain a safe distance from suspension clamps, dead-ends, or armor rods—typically about one hand's width (≈8 inches) from hardware.

For dielectric dampers in EHV fields, maintain at least 15 feet from suspensions or dead-ends to prevent electrical tracking. 3. Wrap the Damping Section Insert the tighter helical or gripping end onto the cable and rotate it around the cable, extending the damping section outward along the span.

The helical damping section absorbs and dissipates vibration energy, reducing aeolian vibration along the cable. 4. Complete the Installation Ensure the damper is fully wrapped and securely gripping the cable without deforming it.

For spiral dampers, the damping section should extend along the cable without contacting other hardware. Stockbridge-type dampers may be installed on armor rods or directly on the cable using optional armor rods if required. 5.

Multiple Dampers and Spacing If using multiple dampers, do not place more than three in a subset to avoid binding and reduced effectiveness. Dampers can be installed at either end of the span or both ends, depending on vibration analysis.

Safety and Performance Tips

Only trained technicians should perform installation. Avoid contact with energized lines; follow electrical safety protocols. Select the proper damper size and type for the cable and environmental conditions.

Store and handle dampers carefully to maintain their precision and effectiveness. Following these steps ensures effective vibration mitigation, protects the fiber optic cable from mechanical stress, and maintains signal integrity.
