Wiring of the 18-circuit distribution box

An 18-circuit distribution box is wired by connecting the main supply to a main breaker, routing through an RCCB for protection, and distributing power to individual MCBs for each circuit, with proper neutral and earth connections.

Main Components and Layout

Main Breaker (2-Pole MCB or Isolator): The incoming phase and neutral lines from the utility or meter are connected to the main breaker, which acts as the primary disconnect for the entire system.

RCC

B (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Connected downstream of the main breaker, the RCCB protects against leakage currents, electric shocks, and insulation faults. Its output feeds the branch MCBs.

Branch MC

Bs: Each of the 18 circuits is protected by a single-pole or double-pole MCB depending on the load type.

Single-pole MC

Bs are typically used for lighting and socket circuits, while double-pole MCBs may be used for high-power appliances. Neutral and Earth Bars: The neutral wires from all circuits are connected to a neutral bus bar, and all earth wires are connected to an earth bus bar to ensure proper grounding.

Wiring Procedure

Installation and Preparation: Secure the distribution box in a suitable location. Prepare all MCBs, RCCB, wires, and ties according to the design and load requirements. Breaker Arrangement: Arrange the 18 MCBs from left to right, leaving reserved positions if needed.

The main breaker and RCCB are typically placed on the left side. Wire Selection and Color Coding: Use appropriate wire sizes based on load: 2. 5mm² for lighting and sockets, 4mm² for air conditioning or heavy loads.

Standard color coding: phase wires (yellow, green, red for A, B, C phases), neutral (blue), and earth (green/yellow),. Connections: Connect the incoming phase and neutral to the main breaker. Connect the output of the main breaker to the input of the RCCB.

From the RCC

B output, connect phase wires to the input terminals of each MCB and neutral wires to the neutral bus bar. Connect each circuit's load wires to the output terminals of the respective MCBs. Connect all earth wires to the earth bus bar.

Wire Management: Route wires neatly, with incoming wires on the left and outgoing wires on the right. Use plastic ties to bind wires uniformly, ensuring no kinks or overlaps. Labeling and Safety Checks: Clearly mark each circuit, AC/DC supply, and voltage levels.

Perform a safety inspection to check for short circuits, proper grounding, and correct breaker operation.

Safety Considerations

Ensure the RCCB rating matches the main breaker (commonly 30mA for domestic single-phase systems),. Verify that all connections are tight and insulated. Avoid overloading any single MCB; distribute loads evenly across the 18 circuits.

Always switch off the main breaker before performing any wiring or maintenance. By following this structured approach, an 18-circuit distribution box can be safely and efficiently wired, providing reliable protection and organized power distribution throughout the building.
