Double busbar wiring steps

A double busbar system uses two parallel busbars to supply feeders, allowing flexible load transfer, maintenance without interruption, and improved reliability.

Overview

In a double busbar configuration, two busbars (Bus-I and Bus-II) run in parallel, and feeders or transformers can be connected to either bus. This setup allows one bus to serve as the main bus while the other acts as a main cum transfer bus, enabling load transfer between buses during maintenance or faults without interrupting supply.

Key Components

Busbars: Two parallel conductors carrying the same voltage. Circuit Breakers: Each feeder or transformer is connected through a breaker to one of the buses.

Isolators/

Disconnect Switches: Used to safely isolate feeders or bus sections for maintenance.

Bus Coupler/

Bus Tie Breaker: Connects the two busbars, allowing synchronization and load transfer. Earth Switch: Provides grounding for safety during maintenance.

Operation

Normal Operation: Feeders are distributed between Bus-I and Bus-II. One bus may carry more critical loads, while the other can act as a backup or transfer bus. Manual Changeover: Personnel can transfer loads from one bus to another without interruption using a unit sequence switch and synchronization relay.

Automatic Changeover: In some substations, an auto-transfer logic can switch loads to the alternate bus during faults, though this may involve brief interruptions. Synchronization: Before closing the bus tie breaker, the two busbars are synchronized using a relay to ensure voltage, phase, and frequency match.

Advantages

High Reliability: Faults on one bus do not interrupt all feeders. Maintenance Flexibility: One bus can be de-energized for maintenance while the other continues supplying power. Operational Flexibility: Load can be redistributed between buses to balance currents or during expansion.

Improved Fault Management: Reduces the impact of bus faults on the overall system.

Typical Applications

Medium to large substations where continuity of supply is critical. Industrial plants with high reliability requirements. Power stations with multiple generators or feeders operating at the same voltage.

Variants

Double Bus Single Breaker Scheme: Each bay has one breaker, and one bus acts as a transfer bus. Only one feeder can be transferred at a time. Double Bus Double Breaker Scheme: Each feeder has two breakers, one for each bus, providing maximum flexibility and redundancy.

In summary, the double busbar wiring method enhances substation reliability, allows uninterrupted maintenance, and provides operational flexibility by enabling load transfer between two parallel busbars. Proper design includes synchronization, isolators, and bus tie breakers to ensure safe and efficient operation.
