Fiber Optic Cable Tray Joint Fabrication

Fiber optic cable tray joint fabrication involves splicing fibers, organizing them in splice trays, and securing them within closures to ensure low loss, mechanical strength, and environmental protection.

Splicing Methods

Fiber optic joints are created using splices or connectors. Splices form permanent joints, while connectors allow temporary connections or equipment interfacing. Fusion splicing is the most common method for singlemode fibers, offering the lowest optical loss and minimal reflectance.

Mechanical splicing is typically used for multimode fibers or temporary restorations. Proper splicing ensures low optical loss, minimal reflectance, and high mechanical strength, which are critical for network performance.

Splice Tray Organization

Splice trays are used to organize and protect spliced fibers within closures. Each tray holds a specific number of splices, commonly 12 per tray, and multiple trays can be stacked to accommodate high fiber counts. For example, a medium multi-function joint (MMJ) can hold up to 144 fibers using 12 trays, while larger closures can support up to 1344 fibers with multiple tray stacks.

Trays maintain the minimum bending radius of fibers and allow for future expansion.

Joint Closures

Fiber optic closures, also called splice closures, house the spliced fibers and protect them from environmental factors such as moisture, dust, and mechanical stress. Closures come in various types: Dome or vertical closures: Suitable for wall, pole, or aerial mounting, supporting multiple cable entries and high fiber counts. Multi-function closures: Can serve as chamber joints, track joints, spur joints, or distribution joints, with flexible port configurations for different cable entry methods.

Pre-connectorized closures: Include adapters for SC or LC connectors, simplifying field deployment. Closures typically feature heat-shrink or mechanical sealing for cable entry, ensuring IP68-level waterproofing and mechanical protection.

Cable Tray Integration

Fiber cable trays provide a structured pathway for routing fibers between network cabinets, distribution frames, and other devices. They include channels, transitional fittings, and support structures that allow tool-free assembly and flexible configuration. Proper integration of splice closures within trays ensures organized routing, easy maintenance, and reduced installation time.

Best Practices

Maintain minimum bend radius for all fibers to prevent signal loss. Label trays and fibers for easy identification and troubleshooting. Use closures appropriate for the fiber count and environmental conditions.

Ensure secure mounting of closures within trays or on walls/poles. Plan for future expansion by leaving spare tray capacity. By following these practices, fiber optic cable tray joint fabrication ensures reliable, high-performance, and maintainable network infrastructure.
