Telecommunications-specific optical cable models

Telecommunications networks primarily use single-mode fibers (OS1, OS2) for long-haul and backbone applications, and multimode fibers (OM1–OM5) for shorter-distance, high-bandwidth connections.

Single-

Mode Fiber (SMF)Single-mode fibers feature a narrow core (8–10 µm) that allows only one light mode to propagate, minimizing signal dispersion and enabling long-distance, high-speed transmission. Key models include: OS1: Tight-buffered construction for indoor use, such as data centers and enterprise backbones. Supports speeds up to 100 Gbps over distances of 10 km.

OS2: Loose-tube construction optimized for outdoor and long-haul telecom networks, including undersea cables. Supports speeds up to 100 Gbps over distances exceeding 40 km. ITU-T G.

652: Standard single-mode fiber operating at 1310 nm, widely used in SDH and PDH systems.

Dispersion-

Shifted Fibers (G. 653/G. 655): Designed to minimize pulse spreading near 1550 nm, suitable for high-speed long-haul systems.

Multimode Fiber (MMF)Multimode fibers have a larger core (50–62. 5 µm), allowing multiple light modes to propagate. They are ideal for shorter distances and high-bandwidth applications such as LANs and data centers.

Common models include: OM1: 62. 5 µm core, supports 10 Gbps up to 100 ft; cost-effective for legacy systems. OM2: 50 µm core, supports 10 Gbps up to 260 ft.

OM3: 50 µm core, optimized for laser-based transmission, supports 10 Gbps up to 1000 ft. OM4: Enhanced version of OM3, supports 10–100 Gbps up to 1300 ft. OM5: Uses short wavelength division multiplexing (SWDM) to transmit multiple wavelengths simultaneously, supporting 200–400 Gbps over moderate distances.

Construction and Environmental Considerations

Fiber optic cables are also classified by construction type: Tight-Buffered: Suitable for indoor installations, easier to handle and terminate.

Loose-

Tube: Designed for outdoor or long-haul deployments, protects fibers from environmental stress. Armored Cables: Provide mechanical protection for harsh environments.

Key Performance Metrics

Attenuation: Single-mode fibers typically have 0. 2–0. 5 dB/km loss at 1550 nm.

Bandwidth: Multimode fibers vary from 500 MHz·km (OM1) to >2000 MHz·km (OM5). Wavelengths: SMF commonly uses 1310 nm and 1550 nm, while MMF uses 850 nm and 1300 nm.

Summary

For telecommunications applications: Long-haul and backbone networks: OS2 single-mode fibers, dispersion-shifted fibers, ITU-T G. 652/G. 655 standards.

Short-distance, high-bandwidth networks: OM3–OM5 multimode fibers with SWDM for maximum throughput. Indoor vs outdoor deployment: Tight-buffered for indoor, loose-tube or armored for outdoor/harsh environments. These models ensure optimal performance, minimal signal loss, and compatibility with modern high-speed telecom systems.
