Checking optical attenuation at the optical port of an H3C switch

Use the display transceiver diagnosis interface command on the H3C CLI to view optical port attenuation and other transceiver diagnostic data.

Steps to Check Optical Port Attenuation

Access the CLI Log in to the H3C switch via console, Telnet, or SSH. Identify the Interface Determine the port you want to check. For example, GigabitEthernet 1/0/1 or HundredGigE 1/0/29.

View Transceiver Information Run the command:display transceiver interface This shows the transceiver model, fiber type, transmission distance, and operating wavelength. Check Diagnostic Data (DOM) To view real-time optical parameters, including TX/RX power and attenuation, run:display transceiver diagnosis interface This command provides Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) data such as transmit power, receive power, voltage, current, and temperature. The optical attenuation can be inferred from the difference between transmitted and received optical power.

Interpret the ResultsTX Power: Optical power sent by the transceiver.

R

X Power: Optical power received at the other end. Attenuation: Calculated as TX Power - RX Power. High attenuation may indicate fiber loss, dirty connectors, or long distances.

Notes

Some H3

C transceivers, like certain QSFP-40G-BIDI models, may not support DOM monitoring, so real-time TX/RX power and attenuation may not be available. Use display interface brief to quickly check link status and port statistics before running detailed transceiver diagnostics. Ensure the transceiver is H3C-certified for full diagnostic support, as non-certified modules may not report accurate DOM data.

By following these steps, you can effectively monitor optical port attenuation and ensure your fiber links are operating within expected parameters.
