Types of switches for distribution boxes

Distribution boxes primarily use main switches, circuit breakers, and transfer switches to control and protect electrical circuits.

Main Switches

The main switch or main breaker controls the entire electrical supply to the distribution box. It allows the complete disconnection of power during maintenance or emergencies and is rated for the maximum current capacity of the electrical service. This switch ensures safety by providing a single point to shut off electricity to all circuits.

Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers are automatic switches that protect individual circuits from overcurrent, short circuits, or ground faults. When excessive current flows, the breaker trips, interrupting the power flow. Modern breakers can be reset manually by flipping the switch back to the “on” position after resolving the issue.

They are the most common type of switch in residential and commercial distribution boxes.

Transfer Switches

Transfer switches are used in setups with backup power sources, such as generators. They allow the seamless transfer of electrical load from the main supply to a backup source. There are two types: Manual Transfer Switches: Operated manually to switch power to a backup source.

Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS): Automatically switch to backup power during a supply disruption, commonly used in hospitals and critical infrastructure.

Additional Switchgear Components

Distribution boxes may also include fuses, residual current devices (RCDs), and bypass switches. These components work together to ensure safety by preventing overloads, short circuits, and electrical faults. Busbars within the box distribute power from the main switch to individual breakers, providing a reliable connection point for all circuits.

Summary

In essence, the key switches in distribution boxes are: Main switches for overall control. Circuit breakers for individual circuit protection. Transfer switches for backup power management.

Supplementary switches like bypass switches and RCDs for enhanced safety. These switches collectively ensure safe, efficient, and reliable distribution of electricity throughout a building or facility.
