Optical Module Threshold

Optical module threshold values define the acceptable transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) power levels to ensure reliable signal transmission and prevent link errors.

Typical Threshold Ranges

Transmit Power (Tx): Usually between -1 dBm and -7 dBm for standard modules, with 6 dB considered a healthy range. Receive Power (Rx): Typically expected between -1 dBm and -9. 9 dBm.

Values below -14 dBm may indicate excessive signal loss or faults in the fiber link. Noise Floor: If Rx drops to -30 dBm or lower, the module is likely reading the receiver's noise floor, indicating no usable signal.

Key Concepts

Receiver Sensitivity: The minimum optical power at which the receiver can decode data with an acceptable bit error rate (BER). Lower (more negative) dBm values indicate better sensitivity, allowing operation over longer distances or higher-loss links. Minimum Receiver Power: The actual received power at the endpoint after accounting for all link losses.

This is calculated based on the fiber infrastructure and link budget, not a fixed transceiver specification. Alarm and Warning Thresholds: Optical modules often allow configuration of thresholds for Tx and Rx power. Exceeding these thresholds triggers warnings or alarms to prevent link degradation.

Practical Considerations

Always verify the module datasheet for Tx/Rx ranges, link reach, and fiber type compatibility (singlemode vs multimode) before deployment. Use DDM/DOM monitoring to track real-time optical power, temperature, and voltage, ensuring the module operates within safe thresholds. A 3 dB change in power roughly halves or doubles the received light, so small dBm variations can significantly impact link performance.

Summary

Optical module threshold values are critical for maintaining network reliability. Transmit power should remain within the module's specified range, and receive power must stay above the minimum required for proper decoding. Monitoring these thresholds helps detect fiber faults, connector issues, or excessive attenuation, ensuring stable and efficient optical communication.
