How to connect fiberglass float tails

Fiberglass float tails can be securely connected using marine-grade epoxy, reinforced with fiberglass cloth, or fastened with bolted joints for strength and durability.

Preparation

Clean and Sand Surfaces: Ensure both the float tail and the attachment area are clean, dry, and lightly sanded to promote adhesion. Check for Water Intrusion: Inspect the hull and float for any waterlogged areas or rot. Drill small test holes if necessary and fill with marine epoxy if the core is sound.

Connection Methods1.

Epoxy and Fiberglass Reinforcement

Apply a layer of marine-grade epoxy to both surfaces. Lay fiberglass cloth over the joint and saturate it with epoxy. Smooth out air bubbles and allow it to cure fully.

This method creates a strong, watertight bond suitable for most float applications. 2.

Bolted Joints

For joints that must transfer significant forces, bolted connections are recommended over screws. Drill holes through both the float tail and the mounting surface. Use stainless steel bolts with washers and nuts, and seal the holes with marine-grade sealant to prevent water intrusion.

Bolted joints provide mechanical strength and are ideal for high-stress areas. 3.

Self-

Tapping Screws (Limited Use)Self-tapping screws can be used for light-duty connections but only transfer shear forces to a limited extent. Pre-drill pilot holes and use screws designed for fiberglass to avoid cracking.

Tips for Durability

Reinforce Corners and Edges: Apply extra layers of fiberglass cloth at stress points. Allow Proper Curing: Follow epoxy manufacturer instructions for curing time and temperature. Seal All Penetrations: Any holes for bolts or screws should be sealed to prevent water ingress.

Consider Float Alignment: Ensure the float tails are aligned properly to maintain balance and performance of the boat. By combining epoxy reinforcement with mechanical fasteners where needed, fiberglass float tails can be securely attached, providing both strength and water resistance for long-term use.
