Connection method of beam splitter

Beam splitters are connected and mounted using specialized holders or mounts that align the optical axis, with orientation depending on the type—cube, plate, or pellicle—to ensure proper splitting and minimal optical distortion.

Mounting and Connection Methods

Cube Beam Splitters: Cube beam splitters are typically constructed from two right-angle prisms cemented together. They are mounted in cube holders that secure the cube at a 0° angle of incidence (AOI) or 45° depending on the application. The 0° AOI ensures the transmitted beam remains aligned with the optical axis, while the reflected beam is deviated 90°, minimizing beam offset and ghosting.

Mounts often include adjustable screws or kinematic stages to fine-tune alignment in interferometry or laser setups. For high-power applications, optically contacted cubes are preferred over cemented cubes due to higher damage thresholds. Plate Beam Splitters: Plate beam splitters are thin, flat glass plates coated on one surface.

They are usually mounted at a 45° AOI using plate holders or adjustable mounts. The transmitted beam is slightly displaced due to refraction, so mounts may include compensation plates in one arm to equalize optical path lengths. Wedges and anti-reflection coatings are used to reduce ghost reflections.

Alignment is critical, and mounts often allow tip, tilt, and rotation adjustments to ensure the correct splitting ratio and beam direction. Pellicle Beam Splitters: Pellicle beam splitters consist of a thin nitrocellulose membrane under tension in a metal frame. They are mounted in delicate pellicle holders that prevent membrane damage.

Since the membrane is extremely thin, it introduces minimal chromatic dispersion and ghosting. These mounts are designed to avoid contact with the membrane and are suitable for low-power applications where beam quality is critical. Connection Considerations: Orientation: Ensure the coated surface faces the incoming beam for optimal splitting.

Stability: Use rigid mounts to prevent vibration-induced misalignment. Beam Path: Align the optical axis carefully to maintain the desired reflection/transmission ratio.

High-

Power Use: Optically contacted cubes or wedged plates are preferred to avoid damage. Polarization: For polarizing beam splitters, orientation must match the desired polarization separation. In summary, the actual connection method involves selecting the appropriate mount for the beam splitter type, securing it without stress, and aligning it precisely along the optical axis to achieve the intended splitting or combining of light while minimizing optical artifacts.
