Semiconductor laser diode LD

A laser diode (LD) is a semiconductor device that converts electrical current into coherent light, widely used in communications, industrial, medical, and consumer applications.

Overview

A laser diode is a semiconductor device similar to a light-emitting diode (LED), but it produces coherent, monochromatic light through stimulated emission at a p–n or p–i–n junction when driven by an electrical current. The emitted wavelength depends on the semiconductor material, ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR).

Unlike LE

Ds, LDs have narrow spectral width, high coherence, and high directivity, making them suitable for precision applications.

Structure and Operation

Laser diodes typically use a heterostructure with a p–i–n configuration, where electrons and holes recombine in the active region to release photons. Optical feedback from a resonator allows laser oscillation, amplifying light in a specific direction.

L

Ds can be edge-emitting or surface-emitting, with packaging options including TO-cans, butterfly packages, and chip-on-submount designs.

Key Characteristics

Optical Power: Measured in milliwatts (mW) to watts (W), depending on the diode and application. Wavelength: Determined by the semiconductor material; common ranges include 375–2000 nm for standard LDs. Beam Quality: Narrow emission area and high light density, often 100–1000 times higher than LEDs.

Temperature Sensitivity: Optical output decreases with increasing temperature, requiring careful drive current control. Monochromaticity: High color purity and narrow spectral width, enabling precise applications like photolithography and high-speed communications.

Applications

Laser diodes are used across multiple fields: Telecommunications: Fiber-optic communication systems. Consumer Electronics: CD/DVD/Blu-ray reading, laser pointers, projectors. Industrial: Material processing, cutting, welding, and photolithography.

Medical: Endoscopes, laser surgery, and diagnostic devices. Automotive: Headlights, projections, and LiDAR systems. Environmental and Energy: Replacing mercury lamps in projection and photolithography, reducing power consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Advantages Over LEDsHigher brightness and light density. Narrow spectrum and excellent monochromaticity. Stable optical output at high currents.

Efficient energy conversion for high-power applications.

Manufacturers and Products

Companies like Nichia produce LDs across UV, blue, green, and red wavelengths, offering high reliability, miniaturized packages, and integrated RGB solutions for projectors and industrial applications. Thorlabs provides LDs with output powers from 0. 2 mW to 2 W and wavelengths from 375–2000 nm, including specialized Quantum Cascade and Interband Cascade lasers.

In summary, LD semiconductor laser diodes are versatile, high-performance light sources with precise optical properties, widely used in modern technology from communications to industrial and medical applications.
