Standard for using a three-level distribution box

A three-level distribution box system must follow hierarchical wiring, separate power and lighting circuits, ensure proper protection, and maintain safe distances between boards and equipment.

Hierarchical Wiring Principles

In a three-level distribution system, no electrical equipment should bypass any level. The main distribution board (primary) must not be directly connected to end-use equipment, and secondary and tertiary boxes must follow the hierarchical branching principle to maintain system integrity and safety. This ensures that each level performs its designated function: primary boxes handle overall site power, secondary boxes distribute to buildings or zones, and tertiary boxes supply individual equipment or household systems.

Separation of Circuits

Power and lighting circuits should be installed separately. If combined in the same distribution board, they must have separate branch circuits and switch boxes. This prevents interference and enhances safety.

The principle of “one machine, one switch, one protection, one box, one lock” ensures that a single switch or breaker does not control multiple devices, reducing the risk of overload or electrical hazards. Protection MeasuresThree-level distribution systems require leakage protection at multiple levels. Typically, a leakage protector is installed in the tertiary (final) box, and an additional protector may be installed in the secondary or primary box, forming two-level protection.

Residual current devices (RCDs) and circuit breakers are used to protect circuits from overloads, short circuits, and earth leakage.

Installation and Spacing Requirements

Distribution distances should be minimized: the main board should be near the power source, secondary boards near concentrated loads, and tertiary boxes close to the equipment. The distance between a distribution board and a switch box should not exceed 30 meters, and the horizontal distance from a switch box to controlled equipment should ideally be ≤3 meters. Environmental safety: Boards must be installed in dry, well-ventilated locations, away from harmful gases, moisture, heat, or mechanical impact.

Adequate space must be provided for maintenance, allowing two people to work simultaneously. Height and accessibility: Secondary boxes are typically installed about 1. 5 meters above the ground, ensuring easy access for operation and maintenance.

Summary

Using a three-level distribution box requires adherence to hierarchical wiring, separation of circuits, proper protection with RCDs and leakage devices, and careful placement to minimize distances and ensure safety. Following these standards ensures reliable power distribution, reduces electrical hazards, and complies with construction and electrical safety regulations.
