Base station construction optical modules

Optical module base stations rely on integrated optical chips and modules to convert, transmit, and receive high-speed optical signals between BBUs, RRUs, and the core network.

Core Components

Optical Chips: These are the fundamental building blocks of base station optical communication systems. They perform laser emission (using DFB, EML, or VCSEL lasers), optical signal modulation, and optical detection via PIN or APD photodetectors. Waveguides and optical splitters within the chips manage signal routing and splitting, enabling compact, high-speed, and low-power operation suitable for Massive MIMO and high-capacity fronthaul/backhaul links.

Optical Modules: These are system-level devices that integrate optical chips, driver circuits, signal processing chips, and packaging structures. They handle optical-electrical signal conversion, support multiple link speeds (100G, 400G, 800G), and incorporate digital signal processing (DSP) techniques like FEC and PAM4 modulation to enhance transmission reliability. Modules are plug-and-play, allowing easy deployment and maintenance.

Base Station ArchitectureBBU (Baseband Unit): Processes baseband signals and connects to RRUs via optical modules and fiber.

BB

Us are compact and energy-efficient.

RR

U (Remote Radio Unit): Converts electrical signals to radio frequencies for transmission.

RR

Us are larger and consume more power, requiring multiple optical fibers (typically 2–6 cores) for high-speed data transfer.

AA

U (Active Antenna Unit): In 5G, AAUs integrate RRUs and antennas for efficient signal transmission and reception. Transmission Equipment: Optical modules connect BBUs and RRUs over fiber, supporting both short-range (e.g., QSFP28-100G-SR4 for campus deployments) and long-range transmissions (e.g., QSFP28-100G-LR4 or ER4 for macro cells and backhaul) with high throughput and low latency.

Optical Module Types and Deployment4

G Networks: Common modules include 1. 25G, 2. 5G, 6G, and 10G optical modules.

Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) is often used to optimize fiber usage between BBUs and RRUs. 5G Networks: High-speed modules like QSFP28-100G variants are used for both short-range small cells and long-range macro cells. Modules support multiplexing of multiple channels and bidirectional transmission to meet 5G throughput and latency requirements.

Advantages and Considerations

High Speed and Capacity: Optical modules enable 5G and future 6G networks to handle large uplink and downlink data volumes. Low Latency and Reliability: DSP and high-quality optical components minimize jitter and bit errors. Miniaturization: Compact modules reduce footprint, power consumption, and heat dissipation in base stations.

Scalability: Modular design allows upgrades from 100G to 400G or 800G as network demands increase. In summary, the construction of optical module base stations involves integrating optical chips and modules into BBUs, RRUs, and AAUs, ensuring high-speed, low-latency, and scalable communication between base stations and the core network. Proper selection of module types and deployment strategies is critical for both 4G and 5G networks to meet performance and reliability requirements.
