Laser Diode Edge Sealing Direction Diagram

In edge-emitting laser diodes, the edge sealing is applied along the facets perpendicular to the active region, protecting the cleaved edges where light exits the cavity.

Edge-

Emitting Laser Structure

An edge-emitting laser diode consists of a p–n junction active region sandwiched between wider bandgap semiconductor layers, forming a double heterostructure for optical and carrier confinement. The resonant cavity is defined by the polished or cleaved facets at the ends of the active region, which act as mirrors to reflect light back and forth, enabling stimulated emission. The optical axis runs along the length of the cavity, parallel to the plane of the active layer.

Edge Sealing Orientation

The edge sealing is applied to the cleaved facets at the ends of the laser cavity, which are perpendicular to the active region and the direction of light emission. This sealing serves several purposes: Protects the facets from oxidation and contamination, which can degrade performance. Maintains optical quality by preventing scattering or absorption at the edges.

Enhances reliability by reducing the risk of catastrophic optical damage (COD) at high power levels. Typically, the sealing material is applied directly along the facet plane, forming a thin protective layer that does not interfere with the emitted beam. The direction of sealing is therefore normal to the active region plane and aligned with the facet surface, ensuring the laser output remains unobstructed.

Additional Considerations

Facet coatings may be applied before sealing to control reflectivity, such as anti-reflection (AR) or high-reflection (HR) coatings, depending on whether the facet is the output or rear mirror. Packaging often includes a hermetic enclosure around the diode, but the facet sealing remains critical for long-term stability, especially in high-power or high-temperature applications. Thermal management is important, as the sealed edges must withstand operational heat without cracking or delaminating.

In summary, the edge sealing direction in a laser diode is along the cleaved facets perpendicular to the active region, ensuring protection and optical integrity while allowing efficient light emission along the cavity axis.
