Density of Egyptian Optical Cable Lines

Egypt is a critical global hub for optical fiber cables, with 15 in-service submarine cables, 10 terrestrial crossing routes, and 10 cable landing stations, making it one of the densest fiber-optic networks in the world. Submarine Cable InfrastructureEgypt's strategic location between the Mediterranean and Red Seas makes it a chokepoint for global internet traffic, handling approximately 17% of worldwide internet traffic and over 90% of Europe–Asia communications. As of 2023, there are 15 in-service submarine cables landing in Egypt, with an additional 5 under construction, including major systems like 2Africa, HARP, EMIC-1, Africa-1, IEX, Medusa, and SMW6.

These cables connect Egypt digitally with Europe, Asia, and Africa, providing multiple subsystems to enhance capacity and redundancy.

Terrestrial Crossing Routes

To complement submarine cables, Telecom Egypt operates 10 diversified terrestrial Trans-Egypt routes linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. These routes traverse the Sinai Peninsula and other areas to avoid shallow waters, providing resilience and redundancy for international traffic. The terrestrial network also includes Trans Border cables connecting Egypt to Libya, Sudan, and Jordan, further increasing the density and strategic importance of the network.

Cable Landing Stations

Egypt has 10 submarine cable landing stations, evenly split between the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts. Key landing stations include Port Said CLS, Ras Ghareb CLS, Zafarana CLS, Suez CLS, and Alexandria CLS. The new stations, such as Ras Ghareb and Port Said, were built to accommodate the 2Africa system and other new cables, creating diverse terrestrial crossing routes and enhancing network resilience.

Strategic Significance

The concentration of cables through Egypt mirrors the narrow Suez Canal corridor, making it a global communications chokepoint. The dense network allows Egypt to support its digital economy, IT services, and innovation sectors, while also making the country a focal point for international investment and strategic initiatives like China's Digital Silk Road. The high density, however, also increases vulnerability to accidental damage or deliberate sabotage, as seen in cable disruptions in 2024 and 2025 that affected connectivity across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

SummaryEgypt's optical cable network is among the densest in the world, combining 15 submarine cables, 10 terrestrial routes, and 10 landing stations. This infrastructure not only facilitates global internet traffic but also strengthens Egypt's position as a regional digital hub, while highlighting the strategic importance and potential vulnerabilities of this concentrated network.
