Incremental Fiber Optic Cable

Incremental fiber optic cables transmit encoder signals over long distances with high noise immunity, converting electrical signals into optical signals for reliable industrial applications.

Overview

Incremental fiber optic cables are specialized cables used to transmit signals from incremental encoders over long distances without interference. These cables work by converting the electrical signals from the encoder into optical signals using a fiber optic transmitter, which are then sent through the fiber optic cable to a receiver module that converts them back into the original incremental format. This method ensures error-free transmission even in environments with strong electromagnetic interference or extreme conditions.

Key FeaturesLong-distance transmission: Fiber optic systems can reliably transmit signals up to 2000–3000 meters, depending on the module and wavelength used. Noise resistance: Optical transmission is immune to electromagnetic interference, making it ideal for industrial environments with motors, high voltage equipment, or explosive atmospheres. Compatibility: Incremental fiber optic modules can handle A/B/Z quadrature outputs from encoders and can be used with multiple sensors simultaneously.

Flexibility: Transmitters and receivers can be combined as needed, and fiber optic cables can be individually configured for specific applications. Safety: Certain fiber optic encoders are designed for hazardous or explosive locations, meeting ATEX or other safety standards.

Applications

Incremental fiber optic cables are commonly used in: Industrial automation and robotics for precise position feedbackHazardous or high-voltage environments where electrical noise is a concernLong-distance signal transmission in factory floors, conveyor systems, and process controlSituations requiring high-resolution encoder signals over extended distances ComponentsA typical incremental fiber optic system includes: Fiber optic transmitter: Converts the encoder's electrical signals into optical signals. Fiber optic cable: Carries the optical signal over long distances. Fiber optic receiver: Converts the optical signal back into the incremental electrical signal for processing by controllers or PLCs.

Advantages

Eliminates signal degradation over long distancesImmune to electromagnetic interferenceSuitable for extreme temperatures and hazardous environmentsSupports high-resolution incremental encoders and multiple signal channels Incremental fiber optic cables are therefore a reliable solution for transmitting encoder signals in challenging industrial environments, ensuring accuracy, safety, and long-distance performance.
