Burundi Large-Span Bridge

The Burundi-DRC bridge spans approximately 130 meters, connecting Cibitoke province in Burundi with the Democratic Republic of Congo, enhancing regional transport and trade.

Overview and Purpose

The bridge, located in Cibitoke province, is a key infrastructure project designed to facilitate the free movement of goods and people between Burundi and the DRC, strengthening economic ties and regional connectivity. It is part of a broader effort to improve Burundi's transport network, linking to the RN5 route via a 3. 5 km road on the Burundian side and an 11 km road on the DRC side.

The bridge also lies downstream from the 20 MW Kabu 16 hydroelectric power plant, integrating with regional development projects.

Specifications and Construction

The bridge has a total length of approximately 126. 86–130 meters. Construction began on October 2, 2023, with an expected duration of 13 months and 15 days.

The project is being executed by China First Highway Engineering Co (CFHEC), highlighting the role of Chinese engineering expertise in Central Africa. The foundation piling has been completed, marking a significant milestone in the construction process. Temporary bridges are being used to facilitate construction and access for workers and engineers.

Financing and Economic Impact

The estimated cost of the bridge is 24 billion Burundian Francs, with financing support from international sources, including the World Bank. The bridge is expected to boost trade, improve transport efficiency, and support economic growth in both Burundi and neighboring Rwanda by enhancing access to the capital, Bujumbura. Compensation measures are being provided to landowners affected by the project.

Significance

This bridge is a strategic lifeline for Burundi, a landlocked country, as it strengthens cross-border connectivity with the DRC and facilitates regional commerce. It also demonstrates the growing importance of international investment and engineering collaboration in Central Africa, particularly from Chinese firms. Once completed, it will serve as a critical link in the national and regional transport network, supporting both economic and social development.
