Is the optical module added to the BBU

Optical modules in BBUs enable high-speed, long-distance transmission of data between the Baseband Unit and Remote Radio Unit, converting electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa.

Function in Base Stations

In mobile communication base stations, the BBU (Baseband Unit) is responsible for processing signals, while the RRU (Remote Radio Unit) handles signal transmission and reception. Optical modules serve as the transmission carriers connecting BBUs and RRUs, allowing electrical signals processed by the BBU to be converted into optical signals for transmission over optical fiber, and then reconverted to electrical signals at the RRU for wireless communication. This is essential in distributed base station architectures, where BBUs are located in indoor equipment rooms and RRUs are mounted on towers, often separated by long distances.

Types and Specifications

Optical modules vary depending on network generation and data rate requirements: 4G Networks: Commonly use 1. 25G, 2. 5G, 6G, and 10G optical modules to support CPRI interfaces, with multimode or single-mode fiber for distances up to several hundred meters.

5G Networks: Require higher-speed modules, such as 25G SFP28, to support eCPRI interfaces and higher bandwidth demands, with transmission distances reaching tens of kilometers in some cases. Industrial-grade modules are often used in RRUs to withstand extreme outdoor temperatures ranging from -40℃ to 85℃.

Additional Roles

Beyond BBU-RRU connections, optical modules also: Enable fiber backhaul to transmit base station data to the operator's core network for monitoring, troubleshooting, and remote management. Support redundant fiber architectures, allowing automatic switching to backup fibers in case of failure, ensuring continuous operation.

Facilitate FTT

A (Fiber to the Antenna) architectures, converting optical signals to electrical signals to feed antennas for wireless transmission.

Summary

Optical modules are critical components in BBUs, providing reliable, high-speed, and long-distance data transmission between BBUs and RRUs, supporting both 4G and 5G networks. They ensure signal integrity, network reliability, and enable advanced features like fiber redundancy and remote management, making them indispensable in modern mobile communication infrastructure.
