The role of optical modules in 4G

4G optical modules are devices that convert electrical signals into optical signals (and vice versa) to connect baseband units (BBU) and remote radio units (RRU) in 4G networks.

Function and Role

In 4G base stations, the BBU processes signals while the RRU transmits them. Optical modules serve as the transmission medium between these units, enabling high-speed, long-distance communication over optical fiber. They perform optoelectronic conversion, turning electrical signals into light for transmission and converting received light back into electrical signals at the receiving end.

Common Types and Transmission Rates4

G networks use optical modules with different data rates depending on network requirements: 1. 25G optical modules for lower-speed connections2. 5G optical modules for moderate-speed links6G optical modules for higher-speed transmission10G optical modules for high-capacity links, often used in CWDM systems Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)To optimize fiber usage, CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is often employed.

Colored optical modules transmit signals at different wavelengths through a single fiber, which are then separated at the RRU using demultiplexers. This allows multiple BBUs to share the same fiber, reducing the number of fibers required and enabling long-distance transmission without signal interference. Components of an Optical ModuleA typical optical module includes: TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly): Converts electrical signals to optical signals using a laser diode or LEDROSA (Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly): Converts incoming optical signals back to electrical signalsDriver and control circuits: Ensure stable signal modulation and power controlOptical and electrical interfaces: Connect the module to fiber and network equipment Summary4G optical modules are essential for efficient, high-speed communication between BBUs and RRUs.

They support various transmission rates, enable fiber resource optimization through CWDM, and form the backbone of distributed 4G base station architecture. Even with the rollout of 5G, 4G optical modules, especially 10G types, remain widely used in current networks.
