GPON device expansion

Expanding a GPON network involves increasing OLT capacity, adding ONTs/ONUs, and optimizing splitter ratios to support more users while maintaining bandwidth efficiency.

Key Components for Expansion

Optical Line Terminal (OLT): The OLT is the central device that manages all ONTs/ONUs and aggregates upstream and downstream traffic. To expand a GPON network, operators can add additional OLT line cards or deploy new OLT chassis with more PON ports, which increases the number of supported subscribers and overall network capacity.

Optical Network Terminals/

Units (ONT/ONU): These devices connect end users to the GPON network. Expansion may involve installing additional ONTs/ONUs at new premises or upgrading existing units to support higher bandwidth services such as IPTV, VoIP, or high-speed internet. Passive Optical Splitters: Splitters divide a single fiber from the OLT into multiple fibers for ONTs.

Adjusting the splitter ratio (e.g., 1: 32 or 1: 64) allows more users to share the same OLT port. However, higher split ratios reduce the optical power per subscriber, so careful planning is required to maintain signal quality.

Strategies for GPON Expansion

Add OL

T Ports or Chassis: Deploy additional PON ports or OLT units to increase the number of supported ONTs.

Modern OL

Ts often support modular expansion with hot-swappable line cards. Deploy Cascaded Splitters: Use a two-level splitter architecture to extend coverage and serve more subscribers without adding OLT ports. For example, a 1: 4 splitter feeding a 1: 16 splitter can serve 64 users from a single OLT port.

Upgrade ONTs/ONUs: Replace older ONTs with higher-capacity models to support faster downstream/upstream rates or additional services like Wi-Fi 6 and VoIP. Optimize Fiber Infrastructure: Ensure the optical distribution network (ODN) can handle additional splitters and longer distances.

GPO

N supports up to 20–60 km depending on split ratio and optical power budget.

Implement Wavelength-

Division Multiplexing (WDM): For advanced expansion, WDM allows multiple wavelengths on the same fiber, effectively increasing capacity without laying new fiber.

Considerations

Bandwidth Sharing: GPON bandwidth is shared among all ONTs on a PON port. Expanding the number of users may reduce per-user speeds if the total bandwidth is not increased. Power Budget: Adding splitters or extending fiber distances requires careful calculation of optical power to ensure signal integrity.

Network Management: Use OLT management tools and GPON OMCI protocols to monitor and configure new ONTs efficiently. By combining OLT expansion, strategic splitter deployment, and ONT upgrades, a GPON network can scale to support more users and higher bandwidth services while maintaining reliability and performance.

A passive optical network (PON) is a fiber-optic telecommunications network that uses only unpowered devices to carry signals, as opposed to electronic equipment. In practice, PONs are typically used for the last mile between Internet service providers (ISP) and their customers. In this use, a PON has a point-to-multipoint topology in which an ISP uses a single device to serve many end-user sites using a system suc
