Aerial Optical Cable Connection

Aerial fiber optic cables are connected by securing the cable to a support strand or using self-supporting designs, followed by controlled lashing, tensioning, and fusion splicing at designated points. Cable Placement Methods1. Moving Reel Method: The cable is paid out from a reel mounted on a vehicle that travels along the route.

The fiber optic cable is simultaneously raised and lashed to the support strand in one operation, minimizing handling stress and reducing the risk of bending or crushing the fibers. 2. Stationary Reel Method: Used when vehicle access is limited.

The cable is pulled into position beneath the strand using cable blocks. Lashing begins at the far end of the route, with the installer moving toward the stationary reel, ensuring controlled tension throughout the pull. Cable Types and SupportFigure-8 Cable: Combines a steel messenger and optical fiber in a single jacket.

The messenger component is tensioned between dead-end poles, and the cable is installed in one step, simplifying aerial placement.

ADS

S (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) Cable: Does not require a separate messenger wire. It is installed using suspension and dead-end tension clamps, with proper sag and tension set to account for wind and temperature variations.

Lashing and Tensioning

The cable is lashed to the support strand using a lashing machine that wraps a binding wire in a continuous helix along the span. Proper sag and tension are critical to prevent mechanical stress and ensure long-term reliability. Calculations for sag and tension consider environmental factors such as wind, ice, and temperature changes.

Connection and Splicing

Individual fiber strands are joined at splice points using fusion splicing, which welds fiber ends with a precision electric arc to produce near-lossless optical connections. Splice closures are mounted on the strand or at pole locations in weather-hardened enclosures to protect the connections from environmental exposure. After installation, each fiber strand is tested using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) to verify splice loss, connector performance, and overall network integrity.

Safety and Precautions

Personnel must follow OSHA regulations and company safety protocols during aerial installation. Cable reels should be inspected for damage before installation, and care must be taken to avoid over-tensioning or sharp bends that could degrade optical performance. By following these methods, aerial fiber optic cables can be installed efficiently while maintaining optical performance and long-term reliability.

Proper planning, hardware selection, and testing are essential for a successful aerial deployment.
