Fiber Optic Splicing Connector

Fiber optic splicing connectors provide a high-performance, field-terminable solution for connecting optical fibers with low loss and high reliability.

Overview

A fiber optic splicing connector is a device that allows a fiber optic cable to be terminated and connected to another fiber or network equipment. Unlike traditional connectors, splice-on connectors combine the benefits of fusion splicing with the convenience of a removable connector, enabling rapid deployment and high-performance links in the field.

Types of Fiber Termination

Fusion Splicing: Permanently joins two fibers end-to-end using an electric arc, offering the lowest signal loss (~0. 1 dB) and highest durability. Ideal for long-distance or high-bandwidth applications, but requires specialized equipment and is not easily reversible.

Connectors: Provide a removable and reusable connection. Common types include: LC (Lucent Connector): Compact, high-density environments.

S

C (Subscriber Connector): Push-pull design for easy insertion and removal.

S

T (Straight Tip): Bayonet-style connector.

Fusion Splice-

On Connectors

Fusion splice-on connectors are pre-polished connectors that allow a fiber to be spliced directly into the connector ferrule, eliminating the need for field polishing or adhesives. Key features include: Compatibility: Works with popular fusion splicers (e.g., Sumitomo, AFL, FITEL). Fast Installation: Termination can be completed in under two minutes per connector.

High Performance: Low insertion loss, high return loss, and reliable mechanical strength. Versatility: Suitable for LC, SC, and ST form factors, and for 250µm or 900µm fiber cables. Field Applications: Ideal for initial installations, repairs, or moves, adds, and changes (MAC work) in enterprise and data center environments.

Advantages

Reduced Downtime: Rapid field termination without extensive planning. Space Efficiency: Requires less management space compared to traditional pigtail splicing. Durability: Factory pre-polished end-faces and no index-matching gel improve link reliability.

Flexibility: Can be used for both singlemode and multimode fibers, supporting high-bandwidth applications.

Applications

Data centers and enterprise networks requiring high-density fiber connections. Field installations where quick deployment and minimal downtime are critical. Repairs or upgrades to existing fiber links without replacing entire assemblies.

Fiber optic splicing connectors bridge the gap between permanent fusion splicing and flexible, field-terminable connections, providing high-performance, reliable, and efficient fiber network deployment.
