Optical Module Data

Optical modules are hot-pluggable transceivers that convert electrical signals to optical signals for high-bandwidth data communications, supporting various form factors, data rates, and network applications.

Overview

An optical module is a compact, typically hot-pluggable transceiver used to transmit and receive data over fiber optic cables. It has an electrical interface connecting to the system and an optical interface connecting to the fiber network. Modules can plug into front-panel or on-board sockets, and their form factors and interfaces are often standardized through multi-source agreements (MSAs) such as SFP, SFP+, XFP, QSFP28, and CFP.

Optical modules are widely used in data centers, telecom networks, and high-performance computing systems like InfiniBand. Types and Form FactorsSFP/SFP+: Small form-factor pluggable modules for 1G–25G data rates. QSFP28: Supports 100G Ethernet and coherent optics for long-haul or metro networks.

XF

P: 10G transceivers with XFI electrical interface. CFP/X2/XENPAK: Larger modules for high-speed optical links. Modules may support coherent optics, tunable wavelengths, and advanced modulation schemes like QPSK for long-distance transmission.

Key Specifications

Optical module data typically includes: Data rate: 10G, 25G, 100G, 400G, or higher. Reach: Short-range (SR), long-range (LR), or extended reach (ZR) over fiber. Power consumption: Modules are designed for low power to limit heat, e.g., QSFP28 100G ZR operates at 5.

5–6W. Wavelength: Single or multiple wavelengths, often tunable across C-band for DWDM networks. Management interface: CMIS or digital diagnostics for monitoring temperature, voltage, and optical power.

Design Considerations

Modern optical module design focuses on: Reduced power consumption to control temperature rise. Dynamic laser control for precise output power. Accurate photodiode sensing for signal integrity.

Compact form factor for high-density deployments. Reference designs and integrated circuits are available to support 100G and 400G modules, enabling faster development for 5G and data center applications.

Vendor Examples

Cisco QSFP28 100G ZR: Extends 100G links up to 80 km over dark fiber and 300 km over amplified DWDM, supports PTP Class C timing, and uses CMIS 5. 2 management. Huawei eKit Optical Modules: Offers plug-and-play modules for access, ring, storage, and long-haul networks with flexible interface options.

T

I Design Resources: Provides ICs and reference designs for SFP, SFP+, XFP, CFP, and other high-speed modules. Optical modules are essential for high-speed, low-latency, and long-distance data transmission, and selecting the right module depends on network requirements, reach, data rate, and power constraints.

An optical module is a typically hot-pluggable optical transceiver used in high-bandwidth data communications applications. Optical modules typically have an electrical interface on the side that connects to the inside of the system and an optical interface on the side that connects to the outside world through a fiber optic cable. The form factor and electrical interface are often specified by an interested group using a multi-source agreement (MSA). Optical modules can either plug into a front pa
