Fibre Channel Based on Ethernet

Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) is a networking protocol that encapsulates Fibre Channel storage traffic over Ethernet networks, enabling unified data and storage networking. OverviewFCoE allows Fibre Channel (FC) frames to be transmitted over standard Ethernet networks, consolidating storage and general network traffic onto a single physical infrastructure. Traditionally, data centers required separate networks: Ethernet for IP traffic and Fibre Channel for storage area networks (SANs).

FCoE eliminates this separation, reducing cabling, adapters, and switches while maintaining the reliability and performance of Fibre Channel. How FCoE WorksFCoE operates at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model, encapsulating complete Fibre Channel frames inside Ethernet frames, a process called encapsulation. This allows servers to continue using standard Fibre Channel interfaces for storage while sending traffic over Ethernet.

The encapsulation and de-encapsulation are handled by Converged Network Adapters (CNAs), which combine the functionality of a Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter (HBA) and an Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) in a single device. FCoE requires enhancements to Ethernet to ensure lossless delivery, as storage traffic cannot tolerate dropped frames. These enhancements, collectively known as Data Center Bridging (DCB), include: Priority-based Flow Control (PFC): Provides lossless transmission for storage traffic by managing flow control per traffic class.

Enhanced Transmission Selection (ETS): Allocates guaranteed bandwidth to different traffic types to prevent congestion. FCoE uses a dedicated Ethertype (0x8906) for encapsulation and is not routable across IP networks, meaning it is limited to local Ethernet fabrics.

Benefits

Infrastructure Consolidation: Combines LAN and SAN traffic, reducing the number of cables, adapters, and switches. Cost Savings: Leverages existing Ethernet infrastructure, lowering hardware and operational costs. Simplified Management: Maintains Fibre Channel constructs, allowing SAN administrators to manage storage traffic as before.

Support for Virtualization: Ideal for server virtualization, where multiple I/O connections per server are common. ApplicationsFCoE is primarily used in data center SANs, particularly where high-speed Ethernet (10 Gbps or higher) is available. It provides a unified fabric for both storage and network traffic, supporting block storage protocols like SCSI over Fibre Channel and enabling seamless integration with existing Fibre Channel networks.

In summary, FCoE bridges the gap between traditional Fibre Channel storage networks and Ethernet, offering a high-performance, cost-efficient, and simplified solution for modern data centers while preserving the reliability and features of Fibre Channel storage.
