Circuit of the optical module

The functional circuit of an optical module includes driver circuits, trans-impedance amplifiers, post-amplifiers, and automatic power control circuits that manage the conversion between electrical and optical signals.

Overview

An optical module is a photoelectric transceiver that converts electrical signals into optical signals for transmission and converts received optical signals back into electrical signals for processing, operating at the physical layer of the OSI model. Its functional circuit is central to this process, coordinating signal modulation, amplification, and monitoring.

Transmitter Functional Circuit

The Transmitter Optical Sub-

Assembly (TOSA) contains the light source (laser diode or LED) and the driver circuitry. The functional circuit in the transmitter includes: Driver Chip: Processes incoming electrical signals and modulates the laser diode or LED to emit optical signals at the required bit rate. Automatic Power Control (APC): Maintains consistent optical output power by adjusting the drive current to the laser diode, ensuring signal stability and preventing overdriving.

Monitoring Photodiode: Provides feedback to the APC to regulate output power and maintain signal quality.

Receiver Functional Circuit

The Receiving Optical Sub-

Assembly (ROSA) converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals. Its functional circuit includes: Photodetector (PIN or APD): Converts optical signals into a weak electrical current.

AP

Ds provide higher sensitivity through avalanche multiplication. Trans-impedance Amplifier (TIA): Converts the weak photocurrent into a voltage signal of sufficient amplitude for further processing.

Post-

Amplifier: Normalizes signal amplitude and converts the analog voltage into a digital signal suitable for downstream electronics.

Additional Functional Circuit Features

Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM): Monitors parameters such as operating voltage, temperature, transmitted and received optical power, and laser bias current in real time. Power Management: Reduces module power consumption and controls temperature rise, which is critical for high-speed modules like 100 Gbps or 400 Gbps designs. Signal Retiming and Conditioning: Some modules include circuits to retime or condition signals to maintain integrity over high-speed links.

Summary

The functional circuit of an optical module integrates driver circuits, amplifiers, monitoring, and control systems to ensure reliable electro-optical and opto-electrical conversion. Together with TOSA and ROSA, these circuits enable high-speed, high-fidelity data transmission over optical fiber networks.
