Galvanizing Process of Cable Tray Elbows

Cable tray elbows are typically hot-dip galvanized to ensure full corrosion protection, with careful surface preparation, zinc coating, and quality checks applied to all edges and curves.

Surface Preparation

Before galvanizing, cable tray elbows undergo thorough surface preparation to ensure proper adhesion of the zinc coating. This includes degreasing to remove oils and dirt, water washing, acid pickling to remove rust and scale, and a final rinsing to eliminate residues. Proper preparation ensures the steel surface is clean and slightly roughened, which is critical for uniform zinc bonding during galvanization.

Flux Treatment

After cleaning, the elbows are treated with a flux solution, typically zinc ammonium chloride, which activates the steel surface and promotes strong adhesion of molten zinc. The flux also prevents oxidation before immersion in the zinc bath.

Hot-

Dip Galvanizing

The elbows are then immersed in a bath of molten zinc at approximately 450°C. This process coats all surfaces, including inside curves, edges, holes, and welds, forming a thick, protective zinc layer. The immersion time and withdrawal speed determine the final coating thickness, which for heavy-duty or outdoor applications typically ranges between 65 and 85 micrometers.

Hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication ensures a uniform, durable coating that is thicker than pre-galvanized steel and provides superior corrosion resistance.

Quality Control

After galvanizing, the coating thickness is measured using magnetic or electronic gauges to ensure compliance with specifications. Elbows may also undergo load testing to verify structural integrity under expected cable loads. Traceability is maintained through heat numbers, documenting the steel composition and galvanizing batch for safety and quality assurance.

Advantages for Elbows

Complete coverage: Hot-dip galvanizing coats all surfaces, including difficult-to-reach inner curves. Corrosion resistance: Protects against moisture, chemicals, and outdoor exposure. Durability: Reduces maintenance and extends service life.

Self-healing: Minor scratches are protected by sacrificial zinc action. By following these steps, cable tray elbows achieve the same strength, corrosion resistance, and longevity as straight tray sections, ensuring reliable performance in industrial and outdoor installations.
