Fiber Optic Sensor Signal Wiring

Fiber optic sensors typically use a three-wire system: power (brown and blue) and signal (black), with the fiber core transmitting light between the transmitter and receiver.

Wiring Overview

Industrial fiber optic sensors generally consist of a fiber amplifier unit and a fiber sensing unit. The wiring includes: Power Supply: Connect the brown wire to +24V DC and the blue wire to 0V (ground) from a DC switching power supply. Signal Output: The black wire carries the output signal, which can be connected to a relay or PLC input.

The output can be configured as DARK-ON (signal active when light is blocked) or LIGHT-ON (signal active when light is received),. Fiber Core: The optical fiber transmits light from the transmitter (T) to the receiver (R). The fiber can be flexible and installed in narrow or hard-to-reach locations.

Installation and Configuration Tips

Mode Selection: Many sensors have a MODE button to select sensitivity or detection range. Options may include FINE for short-distance detection, TURBO for extended range, and SUPER for harsh environments. Timer Settings: Some sensors allow timer adjustments for signal delay or response time.

Fiber Protection: Use protective jackets or pedestals to prevent fiber damage. Avoid sharp bends and excessive tension. Output Connection: Ensure the black signal wire is properly connected to the control system, and verify the sensor's LED indicator to confirm correct light transmission and detection.

Additional Considerations

Environmental Resistance: Fiber sensors are highly resistant to temperature, vibration, and electrical noise because the sensing section contains no electrical circuits. Non-contact Sensing: The fiber sensor detects objects without physical contact, reducing wear and damage to both the sensor and the object. Installation Methods: Fibers can be surface-mounted using adhesives or embedded in structures for distributed sensing.

Proper surface preparation and protective coatings improve reliability. By following these wiring and installation guidelines, fiber optic sensors can provide precise, high-speed detection in industrial automation and other applications.
