Re-galvanizing of cable trays

The galvanizing process of cable trays involves coating steel with zinc, typically through hot-dip galvanizing, to protect against corrosion and extend the tray's lifespan.

Overview of Galvanization

Galvanizing is a protective process where steel cable trays are coated with zinc, which acts as a barrier against rust and corrosion. This coating is particularly important for trays installed in outdoor or harsh industrial environments, ensuring structural integrity and reducing maintenance costs over time. The process can be applied before fabrication (pre-galvanized) or after fabrication (hot-dip galvanizing), with hot-dip providing a thicker, more durable coating.

Steps in Hot-

Dip Galvanizing

Surface Preparation: The steel trays are first cleaned to ensure proper adhesion of the zinc coating. This includes: Degreasing to remove oils, grease, and dirt. Water washing to eliminate residues.

Acid pickling to remove rust, oxidation, and scale. Final rinsing to prepare the surface for zinc immersion. Flux Treatment: A chemical flux is applied to the tray surface to enhance zinc adhesion and prevent oxidation before dipping.

Drying: The trays are dried to remove moisture and excess flux, ensuring a uniform coating. Zinc Bath Immersion: The prepared trays are immersed in a molten zinc bath, where the zinc reacts with the steel to form a zinc-iron alloy layer. The immersion time and removal speed determine the coating thickness.

Cooling and Inspection: After galvanizing, trays are cooled and inspected for uniformity, coating thickness, and surface quality. Hot-dip galvanizing produces a thicker, more corrosion-resistant coating than pre-galvanized methods, covering all edges, holes, and welds.

Benefits of Galvanized Cable Trays

Corrosion Resistance: Zinc coating protects against rust, even in wet or chemically aggressive environments. Mechanical Strength: Hot-dip galvanized trays maintain rigidity and load-bearing capacity, resisting bending and twisting. Longevity: The thick zinc layer extends the service life of the tray, reducing replacement frequency.

Safety and Maintenance: Smooth edges and uniform coating prevent damage to cables and minimize maintenance.

Pre-

Galvanized vs Hot-Dip GalvanizedPre-Galvanized: Steel is coated with a thin zinc layer before fabrication. Suitable for indoor or less harsh environments but less durable outdoors.

Hot-

Dip Galvanized: Steel trays are coated after fabrication, producing a thicker, more robust layer that covers all surfaces, ideal for outdoor and industrial applications. In summary, galvanizing cable trays, especially via hot-dip methods, ensures long-term protection, mechanical strength, and reduced maintenance, making it a preferred choice for industrial and outdoor installations.
