Automatic Reclosing Design for Relay Protection

Automatic Reclosing (ARC) is a protection strategy that restores power after transient faults while preventing repeated stress from permanent faults.

Overview of Automatic Reclosing

Automatic Reclosing (ARC) is a protection relay function used in power systems to automatically reclose a circuit breaker after a fault has been cleared. Its primary purpose is to distinguish between transient faults, such as lightning strikes or momentary contact with tree branches, and permanent faults, like equipment damage or line breaks, and respond accordingly to maintain system reliability and minimize outages.

Operation Steps

Fault Detection and Trip: Protective relays (overcurrent, distance, or other types) detect abnormal current or voltage and trigger the circuit breaker to trip. Typical response times range from 20 ms to 100 ms. Dead Time Delay: After tripping, a preset delay allows the fault arc to extinguish and the line insulation to recover.

For overhead lines, this delay is usually 0. 3–1 second, while for cable lines it may extend to 1–5 seconds due to higher likelihood of permanent faults. Reclosing Attempt: The ARC issues a closing command to the breaker.

If the fault has cleared (transient), normal power supply resumes. Multi-shot schemes may allow 1–3 reclosing attempts, with IEEE standards permitting up to 4. Lockout Decision: If the fault persists (permanent), the breaker trips again and the ARC locks out further attempts to prevent repeated short-circuit stresses.

This ensures system safety and avoids damage to equipment.

Key Design Considerations

Reclosing Attempts: Typically 1–3, adjustable based on system requirements. Success rates for transient faults in overhead lines exceed 80%. Dead Time and Reclaim Time: Dead time is the interval between fault clearance and breaker reclosing.

Reclaim time is the interval before the ARC resets or locks out. Both can be fixed or adjustable depending on the scheme.

Multi-

Shot Reclosing: In multi-shot schemes, each reclosing attempt may have individually adjustable dead and reclaim times to optimize fault clearance without compromising system stability. System Stability: For lines fed from both ends, synchronized reclosing is critical to prevent generator phase drift and maintain stability limits. Integration with Relays: ARC works in conjunction with overcurrent, distance, or digital relays, and can be implemented using electromechanical or microprocessor-based relays for enhanced monitoring and control.

Benefits

Rapid Restoration: Automatically restores power after transient faults, reducing outage duration. Equipment Protection: Prevents repeated stress on circuit breakers and lines from permanent faults. System Reliability: Enhances self-healing capability of the network, particularly in overhead distribution systems.

ApplicationsARC is widely used in urban and rural distribution grids, medium-voltage substations, and transmission lines, particularly where transient faults are frequent. It is also integrated with digital relays and remote monitoring systems for smart grid applications. In summary, automatic reclosing design involves careful selection of reclosing attempts, dead times, and integration with protective relays to ensure rapid restoration for transient faults while safeguarding the system against permanent faults.

Properly designed ARC schemes significantly enhance power system reliability and operational efficiency.
