Wiring of electronic relays in distribution box

A distribution box with a relay is wired by connecting the main supply to the main MCB, routing through an RCCB for protection, and integrating the relay to control or protect specific loads.

Components Required

Main MC

B (Double Pole): Acts as the main switch for the DB, typically rated 63A for domestic installations.

RCC

B (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Provides protection against leakage currents and electrical shocks, usually rated 30mA for single-phase systems.

Single-

Pole MC

Bs: Protect individual sub-circuits like lighting, sockets, or appliances. Relay (Voltage/Control Relay): Used for automatic switching, voltage protection, or load control. Neutral and Earth Links: Distribute neutral and provide grounding for safety.

Wiring Sequence

Incoming Supply: Connect the phase and neutral wires from the main supply to the input terminals of the main MCB.

Main MCB to RCC

B: Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB. This ensures all downstream circuits are protected against leakage currents.

RCCB to Sub-

Circuits: Connect the output of the RCCB to the input terminals of individual MCBs for each sub-circuit. Relay Integration: For a voltage protection relay, connect the relay input to the phase and neutral after the RCCB. The relay output is then connected to the MCBs or specific loads it is intended to protect or control.

Ensure the relay is rated for the voltage and current of the load it controls. Neutral and Earth Connections: Connect all load neutrals to the neutral bus bar. Connect all earth wires to the earth bus bar to ensure proper grounding.

Safety and Best Practices

Always turn off the main supply before wiring. Use properly rated cables for the main feeder and sub-circuits; for a 60A DB, 16mm² copper cables are typical. Ensure tight and secure connections to prevent overheating.

Label all MCBs and relays for easy identification. Follow local electrical codes and standards for installation.

Optional Features

Voltage Protection Relay: Automatically disconnects the load if voltage goes beyond safe limits. Smart Relays: Can integrate with home automation for remote control and monitoring. By following this sequence, the distribution box will safely distribute power to all sub-circuits while providing protection through MCBs, RCCBs, and relays, ensuring both safety and operational efficiency.
