Wavelength division principle of fiber optic couplers

Fiber optic couplers operate on the principle of wavelength-selective coupling, allowing specific wavelengths to be combined or separated for WDM applications.

Principle of Operation

Fiber optic couplers, particularly Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) couplers, function by selectively coupling light based on its wavelength. In a typical directional coupler, two fiber cores are brought close together so that their evanescent fields overlap, allowing light to transfer between fibers over a short coupling region. The efficiency of this coupling is wavelength-dependent, meaning that different wavelengths of light can be directed to different output ports depending on the design of the coupler.

Wavelength-

Selective CouplingWDM couplers use optical filters, gratings, or fused fiber structures to achieve wavelength selectivity. For example: Multiplexers (MUX) combine multiple wavelengths onto a single fiber by directing each wavelength into the same output fiber. Demultiplexers (DEMUX) separate combined wavelengths into individual fibers, sending each wavelength to its designated output port.

The selectivity is typically designed for specific wavelength bands, such as the C-band (1525–1565 nm) or L-band (1570–1610 nm), ensuring efficient multiplexing and demultiplexing of optical signals.

Design and Fabrication

Fused fiber couplers are commonly used for WDM applications. They are fabricated by heating and fusing two bare fibers while slightly pulling them to form a precise refractive index profile. The coupling region is only a few millimeters long, and outside this region, the fibers do not interact significantly.

The coupling strength varies with wavelength, allowing certain wavelengths to cross over to the other fiber while others remain in the original fiber. ApplicationsHigh-capacity optical networks: WDM couplers enable multiple data channels to share a single fiber, increasing bandwidth without laying additional fibers. Optical add-drop multiplexers: Specific wavelengths can be added or dropped at intermediate nodes in a network.

Telecommunications and FTT

H networks: WDM couplers are widely used for signal distribution, monitoring, and power splitting.

Summary

The wavelength division principle in fiber optic couplers relies on wavelength-dependent evanescent coupling or filtering, allowing selective routing of optical signals. This principle is fundamental to WDM systems, enabling efficient multiplexing and demultiplexing of multiple optical channels over a single fiber, thereby maximizing the capacity and flexibility of optical communication networks.

In fiber-optic communications, wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is a technology which multiplexes a number of optical carrier signals onto a single optical fiber by using different wavelengths (i.e., colors) of laser light. This technique enables bidirectional communications over a single strand of fiber (also called wavelength-division duplexing) as well as multiplication of capacity.
