China Unicom network fiber optic cable

China Unicom operates an extensive fiber optic network, including domestic hollow-core fiber deployments and international subsea cables connecting Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

Domestic Fiber Optic Network

China Unicom has recently deployed its first commercial hollow-core fiber optic cable line, in collaboration with Hengtong. This line serves a dedicated connection for a bank branch in Jiangsu, integrating into the live network with verified stability and reliability. The cable uses a hybrid configuration of 46-core G.

652 fibers plus 2-core hollow-core fibers, combining compatibility with existing networks and enhanced transmission performance. Hollow-core fiber offers lower latency and higher bandwidth potential, representing a significant step toward next-generation telecom infrastructure within China.

International Subsea Cable Projects

China Unicom is also a key participant in the EMA (Europe-Middle East-Asia) subsea cable project, a $500 million initiative jointly developed with China Telecom and China Mobile.

The EM

A cable will link Hong Kong to Hainan, then extend to Singapore, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and France, creating one of the most advanced and far-reaching subsea networks. The cable is manufactured and laid by HMN Technologies, with financial support from the Chinese government, and is expected to be operational by the end of 2025. This project is strategically designed to compete with U.

S.-backed subsea cables and strengthen China's global internet infrastructure.

Strategic Significance

China Unicom's fiber optic initiatives, both domestic and international, aim to: Enhance high-speed connectivity for commercial and financial sectors within China. Expand global network reach, providing direct links between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Support technological leadership in fiber optic and subsea cable technologies, including hollow-core fiber.

Strengthen China's position in the global telecom landscape amid international competition.

Summary

China Unicom's fiber optic network combines cutting-edge domestic deployments with strategic international subsea cables, positioning the company as a major player in both national and global telecommunications. The integration of hollow-core fiber and participation in the EMA cable project highlight its commitment to high-capacity, low-latency, and future-ready network infrastructure.
