Single-mode 4-core fiber optic splicing

Splicing single-mode four-core fiber optic cables requires careful preparation, precise alignment, and testing to ensure minimal signal loss and reliable long-distance transmission.

Cable Structure and Preparation

A typical 4-core single-mode fiber optic cable consists of four individual fibers within a single tube, often protected by aramid yarn, a loose PBT tube with jelly compound, and an outer PE or armored jacket for durability and environmental protection. For armored cables, a metallic spiral layer adds mechanical protection. Each fiber is color-coded (commonly blue, orange, green, brown) to facilitate identification during splicing.

Before splicing: Strip the outer jacket carefully without damaging the fibers. Remove the protective gel from the loose tube if present. Clean the fiber with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes to remove dust and contaminants.

Cut the fiber ends with a precision cleaver to create a flat, perpendicular surface for fusion splicing.

Splicing Methods

Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing is the preferred method for single-mode fibers due to its low insertion loss and high reliability: Align the fibers in a fusion splicer using the color-coded cores. Perform the fusion arc to melt and join the fiber ends. Inspect the splice using the splicer's microscope or an OTDR to ensure minimal loss (typically

Single Fiber Fusion Splicing

This method, suitable for both multimode and single-mode fibers, is an improvement over visual alignment, in that it optimally aligns the fiber cores rather than the cladding.
