Precise Positioning Fiber Optic Sensor

Precise positioning fiber optic sensors provide high-accuracy, contactless measurement of position, displacement, and shape using light modulation within optical fibers.

Working Principle

Fiber optic position sensors operate by transmitting light through an optical fiber and detecting changes caused by the movement or displacement of an object. The core components include an optical fiber, a light source (LED or laser diode), a reflector attached to the object, and a photodetector. As the object moves, the reflector alters the light's phase, intensity, or travel time, which is then detected and processed to determine precise position or displacement values.

This allows for nanometer-level accuracy in demanding environments (sensors like FDM-1 achieve standard deviations under 3 nm).

Advantages

High Sensitivity and Precision: Capable of detecting extremely small displacements, roundness, parallelism, and concentricity. Non-contact Measurement: Ensures wear-free, non-destructive inspection, ideal for delicate or moving components. Electromagnetic Immunity: Performs reliably in environments with high electrical noise, unlike traditional sensors.

Compact and Flexible: Fiber diameters can be as small as 50 µm, allowing integration into tight spaces and small cavities. Harsh Environment Compatibility: Resistant to high temperatures, humidity, corrosive conditions, and mechanical stress.

Applications

These sensors are widely used in aerospace, automotive, robotics, manufacturing, and scientific research. They are particularly valuable for: Inline quality control and inspection of workpieces against CAD models. Measuring linear displacement, vibration, and shape in automation systems.

Monitoring critical components in environments with electromagnetic interference or extreme conditions.

Performance Characteristics

Measuring Range: Varies by model; FDM-1 systems cover 80 µm, while FDM-2 systems extend up to 1 mm. Accuracy: Standard deviations can be below 3 nm for high-precision models. Speed: Measurement speeds up to 20 mm/s allow rapid inspection cycles.

Output: Can provide analog voltage, digital signals, or other formats depending on system design.

Summary

Precise positioning fiber optic sensors combine high accuracy, contactless operation, and robustness to deliver reliable measurements in challenging environments. Their ability to measure minute displacements and shapes with nanometer-level precision makes them indispensable in modern industrial automation, robotics, and scientific applications, offering a significant advantage over conventional mechanical or electromagnetic sensors.
